Jonathan Edwards lived at a time when many people were seriously questioning long-accepted ideas about the world, life, and God, and his answers to these questions have left a mark on the way we think today. While he is often remembered as the preacher of a scary sermon about a spider dangling over a fire, he remains significant as one of the greatest thinkers America has produced. Simonetta Carr traces the events of Edwards’s life from a young student interested in science to husband and father, pastor, leader of the Great Awakening, missionary, writer, and college president. Colorful illustrations, interesting facts, and a compelling story combine to introduce young readers to this important theologian and life in colonial America.

Jonathan Edwards by Simonetta CarrJonathan Edwards lived at a time when many people were seriously questioning long-accepted ideas about the world, life, and God, and his answers to these questions have left a mark on the way we think today.

“Jonathan Edwards is one of the most important post-Reformation Protestant thinkers and writers— at once an intellectual of the highest caliber, a pastor and spiritual theologian, one of the leaders of the evangelical Great Awakening of the eighteenth century, and a devoted family man. The genius of Simonetta Carr’s book is that she manages to capture all these facets of Edwards and compresses them into the scope of a simple, accessible introduction. Young and old readers alike will learn much from her work. It is a delight to read!”
— Oliver Crisp, professor of systematic theology, Fuller Theological Seminary

“Jonathan Edwards believed that the age of childhood was the most important for the formation of piety, character, and habits and that encouraging and instilling the love of reading not just the Bible but good literature was essential to bringing up children in the way they should go. In his own day, he read books about eminent saints that influenced him his entire life. This beautifully produced book continues that tradition; the illustrations are wonderful, and the prose, expertly suited to children and young people, is at once informative and, in the true Edwardsean sense, stirs the affections.”
— Kenneth Minkema, executive director of the Jonathan Edwards Center and assistant adjunct professor of American religious history, Yale Divinity School, and editor of the Works of Jonathan Edwards

“Jonathan Edwards had an all-encompassing vision of God and His work in this world. It is the kind of vision we all need today. This book brings Jonathan Edwards and his vision to life for a whole new generation. I wish I had this book when I was a young reader.”
— Stephen J. Nichols, president of Reformation Bible College and C.A.O. of Ligonier Ministries

From armed bodyguard to galley slave, from loving husband and father to fiery preacher, John Knox was moved by a relentless passion for the honor of God and the purity of His truth and worship. Yet when he was a schoolboy growing up in the small Scottish town of Haddington, he could never have imagined that he would become a major leader of the powerful movement that transformed Scotland into one of the most committed Protestant countries in the world. Simonetta Carr tells the story of how this great Reformer, whose life began humbly, in a faraway, mysterious part of the world, influenced the church and its beliefs far beyond the borders of Scotland, shaping our thinking still today.

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for John Knox – Christian Biographies For Young Readers by Simonetta Carr (Reformation Heritage Books, 2014). Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

John Knox by Simonetta Carr is worth adding to your family’s reading — and to your family library. It’s a well-written, well-produced book that serves multiple ages, and it’s pretty enough to lie on your coffee table when your friends are visiting.”
Reviewer: Danika Cooley (thinkingkidsblog.org)
Rating: 5 Stars

“This fiery orator of the gospel had a great impact in Scotland during his time and this excellent book by Simonetta Carr brings to life this interesting individual for yet another generation of believers to explore. I highly recommend this book for young and adult readers alike as there is something in this book for everyone regardless of age. This book would also be useful as part of homeschool and Sunday School lessons as well as family study time. I look forward to additional books being released in this series.”
Reviewer: Michael Boling (IntelMin.org)
Rating: 5 Stars

“The book is a short read with meaningful images.  It can easily be read in one sitting, like a family worship time or in a Sunday School setting.  And if Christian Schools are looking for reading curriculum, this is an obvious and easy place to start.  It may come packaged as a ‘children’s book’, but I can’t envision a Christian that would not benefit from the story of the great reformer.  Ms. Carr has done the Body of Christ a tremendous service by producing this work, even if her muse provided more inspiration than would be typical.”
Reviewer: Ryan Rickard (declinationblog.wordpress.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I would recommend this book to any family who wants to learn more about one of the pillars of Protestantism. This book would be valuable in a family devotion or homeschool setting.”
Reviewer: Beth Saathoff (bethsaathoff.blogspot.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“I think this book a wonderful addition to your library.  The book was well written, interesting read, and beautiful illustrations.”
Reviewer: Karen Chevalier (buildingherhouse.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“This detailed biography for children on John Knox will undoubtedly be a favorite! You will find it a hearty, worthwhile read that provides inspiration for all of its readers, young and old alike.”
Reviewer: Rachel Hillesland
Rating: 5 Stars

“This book on the great Scottish Reformer would be a wonderful addition to any family library. I can see this book being very valuable for family devotion times as well as being incorporated into homeschooling.”
Reviewer: Joey Parker (parkerjreviews.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“Knox’s story captivates because of the many things that happened in his life, from his participation in revolt and rebellion, to time spent as a galley slave, to exile, and to service before kings…. I didn’t have many books on church history growing up, but I’m sure I would have loved this one.”
Reviewer: Andrew Wencl (andrewwencl.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“As with the previous books in this series, this is a beautifully written and illustrated book. What a treasure to add to any family library!”
Reviewer: Monique Bergmeier (bookmoms.org)
Rating: 5 Stars

“A wonderful tool for Christian parents who desire to share the powerful story of John Knox with their children, I could not recommend Carr’s book more. I would give the book an “A”.”
Reviewer: Amanda Cain (thenerdybookworm.wordpress.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I felt that the book was very well written. Even though it was meant for children, I felt that it gave me a lot to think about as an adult. I don’t think very young children would be that captivated; I do believe that older students would find this to be a fitting supplement to their history studies.”
Reviewer: Sarah Edstrom (atsarahstable.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“Prior to this book I had found one other history book of any sort that came close to the quality and accessibility of this book and that was Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed The World by Paul L. Maier, but even that book is not as high a quality as this book. I highly recommend!”
Reviewer: Jonathan Roberts (staff.pcschools.org)
Rating: 5 Stars

John Knox is a great history book and sums up John Knox’s life very quickly, but not so much as to make it shallow and weak. If you are interested in a short but sweet bio of a great reformer and pioneer of the Christian Faith, then search no longer. It might take two hours to read in its entirety. I would recommend this book to eight – twelve year olds, especially if they are interested in the history of Christian faith.”
Reviewer: Mike Tiede (VickiTiede.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“The author’s careful attention to detail and the artist’s passion-infused windows into Knox’s world are packaged in a stunning layout that gives the book a timeless feel. It is hard to imagine seeing a new illustrated juvenile biography of John Knox on the market again for a long time. It’s even harder to imagine a better one.”
Reviewer: William Boekestein (boekblog.tumblr.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“Simonetta Carr’s biography of John Knox is not only an excellent biography for children, it would be a wonderful place for an adult to begin to meet the real John Knox, pastor, husband, father and loyal Scot.”
Reviewer: Coralie Cowan (lifemoreabundant.me)
Rating: 5 Stars

“Christian Biographies for Young Readers has done it again.  Simonetta Carr’s beautifully illustrated and easily readable biography of John Knox will be a wonderful addition to your library.”
Reviewer: Marci Ferrell (thankful-homemaker.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I seriously enjoyed this book. I think it is incredibly well done and will benefit many Christian parents as they seek to put solid, historically and theologically sound books into the hands of their young readers.”
Reviewer: Zack Ford (longing4truth.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“As we’ve come to expect from the “Christian Biographies for Young Readers” series, John Knox is a high quality, hardcover book with thick pages and a sewn binding, making it a sturdy, collectible title that will hold up well to many years of use. I highly recommend John Knox and pray that many will be encouraged as they seek to serve God faithfully in the face of trouble and that they will grow in their understanding of the importance and value of studying church history as a result of this splendid work!!”

Reviewer: Elizabeth Hankins (hankinsfamily.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“This book deserves a place of honor at the coffee table, but might end up in the kids’ bookcase, more often than not. It also should find a place in church or school libraries. If you haven’t picked up a title in the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series, now would be a good time. You won’t be disappointed with John Knox.”
Reviewer: Bob Hayton (FundamentallyReformed.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“In the small, but very informative, book Christian Biographies for Young Readers: John Knox, Simonetta Carr does a fantastic job of giving readers a highly pertinent overview of the powerful life of God’s humble servant John Knox.  The book does not get bogged down in the minute details like some other Christian biographies do, but does a great job of maintaining a consistent flow of writing that keeps it’s readers attention from beginning to end.”
Reviewer: Joshua Davis (ServansOfGraceBookReviews.org)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I would recommend this book (and likely the whole series) to anyone looking to deepen their children’s faith and knowledge of church history.”
Reviewer: Kevin Halloran (kevinhalloran.net)

“Simonetta Carr has done it again. “John Knox” is the seventh installment of her acclaimed “Christian Biographies for Young Readers” series (published by Reformation Heritage). Here she sets out to tell the story of John Knox, the great Reformer of Scotland.”
Reviewer: Timothy Harris (activedidactic.wordpress.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

John Knox is the seventh in Ms. Carr’s series of Christian Biographies for Young Readers. My children and I have enjoyed reading all the books in this series, and I highly recommend them to Christian parents to introduce their children to, not only the life stories of Christian leaders of the past, but also the roles they played in key events in the history of the church. FromJohn Knox, they will learn from his example how to stand boldly for the truth of the Word of God, how to trust God through great trials, and much more.”
Reviewer: Lisa Hodgen (frommeandmyhouse.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“What else can you hope for when you read a book like this to your children? This book is a gem and a perfect way to introduce young readers to the Protestant reformation.  5 stars!”
Reviewer: Alex Houston (reformed-at-last.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“This is not a dry history book. Carr makes John Knox come alive as the reader walks with him through from young adulthood through his death. While the history presented is important, I felt that the biggest takeaway from the book was the priority Knox placed on bringing the gospel to the common people which, at that time, involved much more than just preaching and evangelism. It required attempting to change the law of the land, and even risking imprisonment and death when taking a stand. I couldn’t help but wonder if today’s Christian leaders would be willing to take such a stand.”
Reviewer: Suzanne Jackson (princapecos.blogspot.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“At a time when we don’t know much history, let alone church history, theChristian Biographies for Young Readers is very helpful resource for children and adults. John Knox is a great addition to this series and is just in time for the 500th anniversary of his birth.”
Reviewer: Persis Lorenti (triedbyfire.blogspot.com)

“I’m always collecting biographies to go along with the topics we study in our homeschool, and I love that this one contains so many tools that make it easy to integrate our studies.  This book would be an excellent addition to any children’s library, and I hope to add more books from the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series to our own.”
Reviewer: Crystal Nale (awell-featherednest.com)

“In this biography of John Knox, Simonetta Carr address not only Knox’s life, but the greater cultural issues that drove him to become the man and leader he was. And she does this in a manner that is engaging and interesting, especially for younger readers. I plan to pass this book around among my kids and see if it inspires them as it did me.”
Reviewer: Jeff Randleman (jeffrandleman.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I found this an excellent biography for all ages, but especially for younger elementary children who are just beginning to read longer chapter books, because it still feels like a “picture book,” yet offers a slightly challenging read and provides a wealth of information. Her acknowledgements even include some possibilities for further reading, which I might delve into in the future.”

Praise for John Knox:

“In this clear, concise, and readable short biography, Simonetta Carr tells the dramatic story of John Knox. Setting him in the context of his troubled times, she vividly explains how he became a Protestant, a galley slave, a friend of John Calvin, an English pastor, and, finally, the leading preacher of the Scottish Reformation. This is an excellent introduction for children to the religious ideas that transformed the churches of sixteenth-century Western Europe.”
— Rosalind K. Marshall, fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and author of John Knox

“This story is about my homeland and one of my fellow countrymen. Simonetta Carr’s description of John Knox doesn’t focus so much on the stereotype of a fiery Scot, but brings out more of the gentle, loving, gospel side of this strong Reformer. It was with thankfulness to God that I read about what I owe to His work through John Knox, and it is with appreciation to Simonetta, her historical accuracy, and love of the gospel that I recommend this book to families, Christians, and fellow Scots.”
— Catherine Mackenzie, author of children’s and teens’ books, including John Knox: The Sharpened Sword
