Archives For Simonetta Carr

Irenaeus by Simonetta CarrIrenaeus is remembered for his work in helping the church to preserve the faith handed on by the apostles and to defend it when it was attacked. In this simply written and beautifully illustrated book, Simonetta Carr shows young readers the difficulties the early church faced and how Irenaeus taught Christians to discern truth from error by listening to the Bible. To Christians, the lessons Irenaeus taught are as important today as they were in his time.

Author and Illustrator:

Simonetta Carr was born in Italy and has lived and worked in different cultures. A former elementary school teacher, she home-schooled her eight children for many years. She has written for newspapers and magazines around the world and has translated the works of several Christian authors into Italian. Presently, she lives in San Diego with her husband, Thomas, and family. She is a member and Sunday school teacher at Christ United Reformed Church, Santee, California.

Matt Abraxas has traveled from California to France, studying different approaches to art. He enjoys creating and teaching art and currently exhibits his work at the SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder, Colorado. Matt lives with his wife, Rebecca, and two sons, Zorba and Rainer, in Lafayette, Colorado.

Endorsements:

“Writing church history in a way that appeals to children is not at all easy, but Simonetta Carr has done it time and again with these gorgeous books on various figures from the glorious company of believers who have gone before us. And this new one on Irenaeus is no exception. We know his thought well because of his literary works, but much of his life is in the shadows. Simonetta handles this adroitly, however, and the result is an excellent presentation for children of a key figure in the history of God’s people. Well done, Simonetta!”

Michael A. G. Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I love Simonetta Carr’s books. I know of no other volumes on Christian history that are so wonderfully accessible and beautifully illustrated. Now Simonetta brings to us the story of the second-century pastor and defender of orthodoxy Irenaeus of Lyon. The author skillfully weaves together historical facts and biblical meditations to produce a compelling account. I lament that my children are now too old to place on my lap so that I might read to them this excellent book about a most excellent man.”

Todd Pruitt, pastor, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, Virginia, and cohost of Mortification of Spin

Five hundred years ago, a monk named Martin Luther wrote ninety-five questions, hoping to start a discussion about sin and repentance at the University of Wittenberg in Germany. In a few months those questions had stirred the nation; a few years later, the continent. Today we know that those questions changed the course of both the Western church and world history. In this volume for children, Simonetta Carr tells the compelling story of this father of the Protestant Reformation, tracing his quest for peace with God, his lifelong heroic stand for God’s truth, and his family life and numerous accomplishments. The Reformer’s greatest accomplishment, she writes, “has been his uncompromising emphasis on the free promise of the gospel.”

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Simonetta Carr’s new book Martin Luther from the amazing Christian Biographies for Young Readers series.

“Simonetta’s books are so well crafted that it’s delightful to simply hold them and explore the texture and artistry within and without. Still, it is what Simonetta has captured amongst her precise and enlightening writing that is fascinating for all ages.”
Reviewer: Lesley Eischen

“All in all, I really liked this book. I really appreciated that she does not make Luther come across as a hero to be worshiped but rather as a man, saved by God’s grace and not his own merit, who was used by God to bring people to a correct knowledge of the Gospel and to point them to the Word of God as the only authority.”
Reviewer: Sarah Lambert

“Simonetta Carr’s Christian Biographies for Young Readers: Martin Luther is an excellent resource for teaching children about a key contributor of the Protestant Reformation and is a great conversation starter on what is truly means to be a Christian, justified by faith in Christ alone.”

“We are told our stories matter. Yet so often, it is the current day stories we share, forgetting to delve back into our history. Our church history is particularly important to share for it is the way by which our our children learn about heroes of the faith and hold onto biblical truths. Simonetta Carr writes about such heroes in a way that is sure to draw in, and keep, the attention of children…. This is a hard covered book with pages beautifully printed making this a wonderful book to gift to any child or school library.”

“Whether you know absolutely nothing about Luther and this is your first introduction, or whether this is the tenth book you’ve read on the man and it simply serves as a reminder in a beautifully illustrated way for you to teach your children or others about him… I would encourage you to get yourself a copy of this book, as well as the other 10 volumes in the series. You won’t be disappointed.”

“I enjoy this book’s approach to exploring both well- and lesser-known information about Luther and his story. I’m delighted to add Martin Luther to our collection of Christian Biographies for Young Readers.”

“I’ve reviewed some of the biographies in the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series, and this is another great addition. These books make important figures in church history very accessible to young readers. I also appreciate the author’s honesty about their failings, such as Luther’s anti-semitic writings, briefly mentioned in “Did You Know?”. We should honor the saints of old but recognize that they were fallible human beings in need of a Savior, too… I highly recommend Martin Luther and the whole series.”

“Whether you are looking for a gift for a child, seeking a volume for homeschool history, or simply building your library, this volume is worth purchasing. It is historically accurate, delightfully illustrated, with an appropriately critical tone. It represents both a celebration of the recovery of the gospel with a recognition of the pervasiveness of human sin, even among our heroes. Reformation Heritage Books should be applauded for continuing the series and publishing excellent children’s volumes like this one.”

“I wish I had read more biographies when I was a kid. Actually, I wish I had read more, period. As a Christian parent, I want my kids to learn about my faith, and I pray that one day they will embrace it as their own. By sharing these biographies with them, they learn not only from my example, but from the examples of believers throughout history.”

Young female readers will appreciate Carr’s explanations of how much Luther came to love and depend on his wife Katie, and what a strong woman she was in her own right. Martin Luther by Simonetta Carr is the perfect combination of biography, history, heritage, and good art. This is a book that I would definitely recommend for children. “Simonetta has done a great job bringing Luther to life and I was so appreciative that the great Reformation narrative at the center of Luther’s life wasn’t lost here. To see this tormented monk transformed by the good news of the Gospel and to see him stand firm to reform the Church was exciting to read, and exciting to share with my children. As we read this book, my children could clearly see the need for reformation, and could clearly appreciate that it was God who brought “darkness out of light.””

Furthermore, the books in the series go beyond the simple story of someone’s life by teaching young readers the historical and theological relevance of each character.

Praise for Martin Luther:

“Carr leads readers into the world in which Martin Luther grew up and then served the church and his society with sensitivity to the times and places where his life unfolded. The adventure of bringing the gospel to his people and the drama of his testimony to the truth come alive as we follow his footsteps into the heart of the German government, when he stood up to an emperor, and into his home and the joys he had in raising his family. An excellent introduction to the life of the great Reformer.”
—Robert Kolb, professor of systematic theology, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis

“I am a big fan of both Martin Luther and Simonetta Carr, so this book is a dream come true, an author-subject marriage made in heaven. Simonetta beautifully captures both the life and the key thoughts of Dr. Martin and does so in a manner which is fast-paced and exciting. Parents will love reading this book to their children, and children will love reading it for themselves.”

In 1730, nineteen-year-old Marie Durand was arrested and taken from her home in a village in Southern France for the crime of having a brother who was a Protestant preacher. Imprisoned in the Tower of Constance, Marie would spend the next thirty-eight years there. Simonetta Carr introduces us to the inspiring life of a woman who could have recanted her Protestant faith and gained release, but held fast to the truth—and encouraged others to do so as well. Beautiful illustrations, a simply told story, and interesting facts acquaint young readers with the challenges facing Protestants in eighteenth-century France and show them that even a life spent in prison can be lived in service to Christ and to others.

This week, the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for Marie Durand – Christian Biographies for Young Readers by Simonetta Carr. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“As a historian, I love these books for how they draw young people in to history and make it come alive! As a homeschooling mom, I love using these because they point out the sources they come from and encourage the kids that are reading them to delve in more to the time by giving them a brief bit of information on either side of the time they feature. As a reader myself, I enjoy being able to sit down for an hour or less and dig in myself and learn something new!”

Praise For Marie Durand:

“Simonetta opens a window into Marie Durand’s life and world, giving us a glimpse of what French Protestants experienced during the reigns of King Louis XIV and of his great-grandson, Louis XV of France. We admire their courage and tenacity and desire to follow their example of faithful perseverance under trial, thus bringing glory to God. I’m sure that readers will enjoy this beautifully produced book as they learn about an era in French church history that not many are exposed to.”
-Françoise Anderson, librarian at Bethel Seminary, San Diego, and author of a forthcoming biography of Pierre and Marie Durand

“A wonderful and engaging story of courage, faith, and hope in an era of persecution, this story of the trials and tribulations of Marie Durand is sure to inspire many.”
-Martin Klauber, affiliate professor of church history, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“Marie Durand’s life is fascinating. She was imprisoned when she was nineteen because her brother was a pastor, at a time when Protestantism was forbidden in France. She was released after thirty-eight years. In this book, Simonetta Carr tells this story very simply, but with many details. So we can imagine the difficult life of French Protestants in the 18th century. We can marvel at their faith and their perseverance. The beautiful illustrations by Matt Abraxas help us to understand this story of grace and intolerance, to commune with these ordinary women who didn’t want to deny their faith.”
-Dr. Yves Krumenacker, French historian, Professor of Modern History, University of Lyon

“As a Frenchman, I deeply appreciate the quality of the historical research Simonetta Carr has done on Marie Durand and the way she has brought to light important lessons of the past. I highly recommend this book written with a serving heart and setting stepping stones for the rising generation.”
-Philippe Mayhew, Literature Coordinator for Child Evangelism Fellowship of France
