Women are an essential element in church history. Just as Deborah, Esther, and the New Testament Marys helped shape Bible history, so the women of the Reformed church have helped to make its history great. In Reformation Women, Rebecca Vandoodewaard introduces readers to twelve sixteenth-century women who are not as well known today as contemporaries like Katie Luther and Lady Jane Grey. Providing an example to Christians today of strong service to Christ and His church, these influential, godly women were devoted to Reformation truth, in many cases provided support for their husbands, practiced hospitality, and stewarded their intellectual abilities. Their strength and bravery will inspire you, and your understanding of church history will become richer as you learn how God used them to further the Reformation through their work and influence.

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Reformation Women: Sixteenth-Century Figures Who Shaped Christianity’s Rebirth by Rebecca VanDoodewaard (Reformation Heritage Books, 2017).

“I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the history of the Protestant Reformation –especially those who desire to learn more about the very important role that women played in its success. This book is perfect for a part of a homeschooling history curriculum and would be a timely addition given the important anniversary which is just around the corner.”

“…overall the book was very enjoyable and I would encourage others to pick it up especially women, those with daughters, and pastors who most likely have more women than men in their congregation.”

“After taking a “Women in Church History” course in college, I have loved learning about the powerful women who have helped Christianity to spread throughout the ages. Sometimes it was them going into a scary country on their own. Other times it was a wife supporting her leader of a husband. Reformation Women is a welcomed addition to my collection of books on Women in Church history. What a powerful reminder of what God can do with a heart surrendered to Him.”

“I found Reformation Women to be a personally encouraging, and intellectually satisfying book. More than that, I think it is a necessary book. The ongoing and diverse conversations regarding what makes a “biblical woman” need the historic grounding that this sort of book provides. I hope Rebecca, or another author, also offers us similar biographies of women from other times and places in church history.”

“I highly recommend this book as a way, not to just learn about the history of these faithful women, but to apply their faithfulness to our own lives.”

“Wives, mothers, godly followers of Christ, these women of the Reformation saw fit to live out their faith amidst a culture that was increasingly hostile to the new reforms of Protestants. You will not be disappointed as you read about these faithful followers of Christ.”

“I highly recommend, Reformation women, to any Pastor looking for historical illustrations as well as to every father to tell read these accounts to their daughters to aid in their spiritual growth, as well as to all women to give them a role model to inspire to . This is a book you do not want to miss out on.”

“While there are many books being published on the Protestant Reformation this one stands out in bringing to attention women whose accomplishments and service though great are largely forgotten in church history. If you’re looking to get a better understanding of the contribution women made to the Protestant Reformation this should be one of the first books you pick up.”

“I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone. This book is not just for women. This book is not just for lovers of history. This book is not just for Reformation gurus. Though the book will certainly appeal to those groups, the truths learned and modeled in this book extend much further — into each and every one of our lives as Christ followers. I found myself encouraged, humbled, convicted, and instructed through the godly lives and examples of these unknown women of the Reformation. I believe that the same will be true for you.”

“VanDoodewaard’s study helps to fill the gap which exists at a popular level regarding the role of women in the Reformation. Her study is helpful and engaging and I found each chapter to be better than the last (the chapters on the Frenchwomen Jeanne d’ Albret & Luise de Coligny were particularly riveting). Hopefully this book will help to provide the church today (and perhaps especially the daughters of the church) with models of feminine faithfulness.”

“Throughout this book, I found myself longing for more details and jotting down questions for further study. Mrs. VanDoodewaard successfully whetted my appetite for further study, indeed. I would love to know more about how these women balanced their many responsibilities, educated their children, managed their homes, etc., and because her sources are well-documented in footnotes, I know just where to turn for additional information!”

“Just as Foxe’s “Book of Martyrs” is important in the lives of believers, so are the stories of these women who stood up to the tyranny of the Roman Catholic Church and gave their lives to serve God. VanDoodewaard’s collection of stories will inspire and challenge you in your Christian walk.”

“I appreciated this book because it was well-written, easy to follow, and very interesting. The introduction and conclusion are very helpful in that they give reasons why it’s important to learn about women of the Reformation and lists several things we can learn from them. I’ll be recommending this book when people ask if I have any ideas for a women’s book club at church. But this book isn’t just for women! It’s for anyone who wants to learn about Reformation history and be edified and encouraged in the faith at the same time.”

“The conclusion of the book was especially strong, as it eloquently discussed lessons that we can learn from the women’s lives. The most powerful lessons included the importance of deriving one’s identity and mission from one’s faith rather than one’s role, how people have different gifts and should diligently use them where they are, and how people should have a cause beyond themselves.”

“The stories of such women are, as the author says, “an essential element in church history” (ix). While all made unique contributions, the women are an example of faithfulness to the Lord, His Word, and His church. Reformation Women by Rebecca VanDooewaard will introduce you to women of the Word who fought for the truth of the Word and can give us the courage to fight for that same truth today!”

“I read this book with my wife and we both enjoyed learning about these unique women and their contribution to the Protestant Reformation. They truly were amazing women, and they serve as proof that extraordinary faithfulness to God is a better legacy than a recognizable name. I’m thankful that Rebecca VanDoodewaard could reintroduce these women to modern audiences. They are truly exceptional, and both my wife and I were encouraged by their faith. I highly recommend this book.”
Reviewer: Andrew Wencl

“What I find especially helpful about a book such as this is the reminder that Christianity has never been the domain of men alone. Faithful women, married and serving alongside their husbands or single and serving wherever they can, have been part and parcel of the faith from the very beginning. We do a great disservice to the cause of Christ by forgetting such facts. This volume should be an inspiration and encouragement to men AND women of the faith.”
Reviewer: Joe Westbrook

“…there is much to gain from reading Reformation Women, both for historical enrichment and spiritual encouragement.”
Reviewer: John Wiley
Rating: 4 Stars

“I appreciate how the author never elevates nor demeans women who worked alongside their husbands and children on the home front. Though often in obscurity, yet their works, as a light set on a hill, could not be hidden, and we are blessed and encouraged to follow in their footsteps with honor and dignity even if we never leave the sphere of our homes. Yet, those who are active in the workforce or in positions of leadership will also gain many insights into how to portray the love of Christ where they serve with those qualities unique to believing women. I would especially encourage high school aged women to read this book as they are seeking to discern God’s plan for their lives, and it would make an excellent graduation gift.”

Product Description

If you are a Christian, you have personally experienced the joy of sins forgiven and reconciliation with God. Forgiveness, writes Stanley Gale, “is a divine accomplishment to be savored and offered to others.” Forgiveness is the most basic of Christian graces, yet the topic raises many questions, including these:

  • Is it biblical to “forgive and forget”?
  • Why do we need to confess our sins if they are already forgiven?
  • How do we actually go about forgiving someone?
  • Does the Bible give a place to forgiving ourselves?
  • What does life look like after forgiveness?

In Finding Forgiveness, you will discover practical answers to these questions and many others. With pastoral warmth, the author will help you see how the awe of the gospel dawns anew for those who apply forgiveness and experience the healing of a burdened spirit or broken relationship.

“Forgiveness is both a theological and a personal issue. We all have a sense of what it means to be forgiven and to forgive. But do we truly understand it? Finding forgiveness is an eternal matter! Stan Gale answers all those nagging, ‘yeah, but’ questions that are on so many minds when it comes to forgiveness. In doing so, he teaches a biblically rich understanding of forgiveness with pastoral care. This little book will prove to be time well spent for every reader.”

Pentecostal Outpourings: Revival and the Reformed Tradition Book Cover Pentecostal Outpourings: Revival and the Reformed Tradition
Smart, Haykin & Clary, eds.
Reformation Heritage Books

When Jesus ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, He poured out His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This significant historical and redemptive event was not the last time Christ poured out His Spirit in redemptive history. Mindful of these subsequent acts, Pentecostal Outpourings presents historical research on revivals in the Reformed tradition during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Investigating the British Isles, it observes the outpourings experienced among Welsh Calvinistic Methodists, Irish Dissenters, Calvinistic English Baptists, and Scottish Presbyterians. It then moves on to evaluate the revival instincts among Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists, and the Dutch Reformed in America. May the knowledge of these outpourings of the Holy Spirit help us seek God earnestly to revive His Church once again.

The Cross Focused Reviewers weigh in on Pentecostal Outpourings: Revival and the Reformed Tradition by Smart, Haykin & Clary, eds. (Reformation Heritage Books, 2016).

“What makes this book even more interesting is the multiple flavours of Reformed views that bring out the beauty, the unique perspectives, and the many different ways the Holy Spirit works.”

“[Pentecostal Outpourings] is packed with detailed and well-researched information, covering revivals in both the British Isles and America.”

“Church history is a very important subject to read and study with fellow Christians. This book gives you a good detailed history of different perspectives on revival as it relates to the reformed community.”
Reviewer: Chris Land
Rating: 5 Stars

“I found this book to be balanced because it focused on the truly Christ centered revivals. It discussed the time period and happenings that may have influenced these movements and even cautioned false revivals… a great book to help fill in those gaps of what I had previously learned. ”
Reviewer: Angela Parsley
Rating: 5 Stars

“This book details exciting historical accounts of revivals. All you have to do is to look at today’s headlines to see that our nation desperately needs revival. But what is biblical revival? Is it a planned, man-centered event, such as “Revival – Saturday Night”? No, as one of the editors and contributors of this volume, Robert Smart writes, the intent of the book is to “Promote the knowledge of God, the gospel of Christ, and the great outpourings of the Spirit through a variety of Reformed authors reflecting and applying historical and biblical lessons for today’s Christian leader.””
Reviewer: Bill Pence
Rating: 5 Stars

“Pentecostal Outpourings will make a great addition to a high school homeschooling curriculum and can neatly work as a history or theology section in your child’s study. It is also appropriate for anyone who has an interest in the history of the Reformed tradition or revivalism. I can’t think of a better book on the subject to include in a church library and pastors will appreciate the congregation’s interest in revival without having to worry about the theology that typically undergirds other works on the subject.”
Reviewer: Aaron Cerda
Rating: 5 Stars

Pentecostal Outpourings is a welcome and helpful corrective to much of what has been written about revival. Readable, yet scholarly, it provides a rational, biblical, and theologically sound understanding of how God has revived His church in the past, and how we might expect Him to work in the future.”
Reviewer: Jim Harrison
Rating: 5 Stars

“Through these historical studies Pentecostal Outpourings is making a theological case for revival. Though revivals are not normative for the church, they are the work of a sovereign God who answers prayers.”
Reviewer: Hoon Lee
Rating: 4 Stars

Pentecostal Outpourings would be a great book for the church history lover and an excellent companion to Iain Murray’s Revival and Revivalism. This book would also offer encouragement to church leaders and believers who are praying for revival in their midst. As God has clearly and powerfully moved in the past, perhaps He will be gracious enough to do so again in our lifetime?”
Reviewer: Persis Lorenti
Rating: 5 Stars

Pentecostal Outpourings is a real achievement and a very helpful resource, one that ought to be turned to again and again. Broad in scope, not shallow in depth, inspirational, honest and thoroughly biblical. A worthwhile addition to any reformed believer’s shelf.”
Reviewer: Ross Murphy
Rating: 5 Stars

Pentecostal Outpourings is a very helpful book for Reformed and conservative leaning Christians who are cautious about the modern day Pentecostal movement but who also want to study how God has moved in the past in revival.”
Reviewer: Joey Parker
Rating: 4 Stars

“It was encouraging to me as a reminder that God can and does move mightily in a society that seems apathetic or even hostile to the gospel. It moved me to pray for revival here and now, and any book that gets you doing that is a worthy read indeed.”
Reviewer: Andrew Wencl

“Reading about our forefathers in the faith has encouraged me to pray for and seek revival along these lines… I hope that this book will encourage those like me who find themselves within the tradition to lead the efforts in seeking and promoting revival throughout the entire world, not just in our own churches but in all the churches who call upon Jesus Christ as the only Lord and Savior.”
Reviewer: Christopher Woznicki
Rating: 5 Stars

“In reading these histories, the reader is struck with the truth that God the Holy Spirit is Sovereign and moves as He sees fit, and the reader is struck with the truth that God answers the prayers of His people at are in accordance with His Will. May we be strong and passionate in praying for revival that glorifies God and builds His Kingdom as we proclaim the Gospel, and may God be pleased to grant revival in this day – for the joy of His people.”
Reviewer: Peter Butler, Jr.

“As a student of the history of revivals I hope this book finds many readers and that those who read it would have a burden to see God do again what He has done in the past and that is revive His church.”
Reviewer: Steven Dresen

“While Reformed believers have always rightly been wary of Revivalism (and the emotionalism it produces), God-honoring, biblical revival is something that should be close to all of our hearts. This book goes a long way towards helping us understand what that has looked like over the centuries; and it points us towards what it might look like in our own day.”
Reviewer: Ben Franks

“Pentecostal Outpourings gives me hope, since, as one discovers in this excellent survey of past revivals, significant spiritual decline typically does precede God-wrought revivals. We have the decline. Will revival follow?”

God’s Battle Plan for the Mind: The Puritan Practice of Biblical Meditation by David W. SaxtonThank you for your interest in reviewing God’s Battle Plan for the Mind: The Puritan Practice of Biblical Meditation by David W. Saxton. This book review blog tour is now full. You can see our current list of available review books here: LINK.

During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind, pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word.

Praise for God’s Battle Plan for the Mind:

“The popular conception of meditation has become so badly misshapen by mysticism, New Age influences, and Eastern religious notions that some otherwise sound Christians today seem to recoil from any mention of meditation as a necessary spiritual exercise. But nothing is more vital or more beneficial for understanding the truth and growing in sanctification than quiet, careful, focused reflection on the words and the meaning of Scripture. That’s what the word meditation means in the Bible. No less than six times in Psalm 119 alone, the psalmist says ‘I will meditate’ on the precepts, promises, and principles of God’s Word. The Puritans had much to say about biblical meditation and the important role it plays in a sanctified thought life. Dave Saxton has written an extremely helpful and encouraging digest of some of the best Puritan teaching on the subject. You need to get a copy, read it, put its principles into practice, and ‘be transformed by the renewal of your mind.’”
—John MacArthur, pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California, and president of the Master’s College and Seminary
