Irenaeus is remembered for his work in helping the church to preserve the faith handed on by the apostles and to defend it when it was attacked. In this simply written and beautifully illustrated book, Simonetta Carr shows young readers the difficulties the early church faced and how Irenaeus taught Christians to discern truth from error by listening to the Bible. To Christians, the lessons Irenaeus taught are as important today as they were in his time.

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Irenaeus by Simonetta Carr (Reformation Heritage Books, 2017).

“Carr’s book hits a homerun by enabling young readers to consume a well-rounded overview of Irenaeus without bogging them down to the point where these young minds will become bored and disinterested with the material. Carr once again writes with her audience well in mind and does so rather amazingly.

I highly recommend this book, especially for families who homeschool or for homeschool associations who may offer group classes for their members. This book would make an excellent addition to a homeschool bible and/or world history curriculum.

So Simonetta Carr…with this latest release you have me on the edge of my seat anxiously waiting for what you have next for us in this awesome series.”

“While Irenaeus of Lyon’s life may not be as memorable or his personality as over the top as someone like Luther about whom biography’s abound it is good to see some lesser known biographies come out like this of Irenaeus. This book would be a good middle grade read but also I would encourage adults to read it as well. This series of biographies published by Reformation Heritage Books and written by Simonetta Carr would be excellent introductions to many godly women and men through history especially for adults who have a limited amount of free reading time and want to understand their own families history better since all believers have been adopted and are brothers and sisters in Christ. If you would like to start learning more about some in the early church this would be a good place to start.”

“Teaching Church history can be a complicated endeavor especially with children, yet in Simonetta Carr’s new book, Irenaeus, she continues her pursuit to give children a glimpse of followers of Christ who influenced their modern worldview… Having read her other works in this phenomenal series, Irenaeus, might be the best of an already genre defining biographical series.”

“Young and old alike will profit from and enjoy reading this book, whether you know absolutely nothing about Irenaeus and this is your first introduction, or whether this is the fifth book you’ve read on the man and it simply serves as a reminder in a beautifully illustrated way for you to teach your children or others about him.”

“I think it’s perfectly fine for kids to read and hear works of fiction, but I think it’s also good to let them learn about real Christians who lived in the past. Real people who lived and died fighting the good fight of faith. What better way to put one’s imagination to work than contemplating real events, real Christian people and the teachings of God’s Word? This book is one of a series of books that are a good way to have young people (and older people) practice doing that.”

Endorsements:

“Writing church history in a way that appeals to children is not at all easy, but Simonetta Carr has done it time and again with these gorgeous books on various figures from the glorious company of believers who have gone before us. And this new one on Irenaeus is no exception. We know his thought well because of his literary works, but much of his life is in the shadows. Simonetta handles this adroitly, however, and the result is an excellent presentation for children of a key figure in the history of God’s people. Well done, Simonetta!”

Michael A. G. Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I love Simonetta Carr’s books. I know of no other volumes on Christian history that are so wonderfully accessible and beautifully illustrated. Now Simonetta brings to us the story of the second-century pastor and defender of orthodoxy Irenaeus of Lyon. The author skillfully weaves together historical facts and biblical meditations to produce a compelling account. I lament that my children are now too old to place on my lap so that I might read to them this excellent book about a most excellent man.”
