We hear about it regularly: pastors resigning the ministry, people leaving their churches, churches splitting because of internal discord, and Christians fighting against one another. Paul's letters to the Thessalonians open up his pastoral heart and theology in a way that addresses contemporary church life, and here Daniel Hyde presents warm exposition with careful application. This is a fine commentary, but it is much more: any Christian will gain from reading the Thessalonian letters alongside this book.

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on From the Pen of Pastor Paul: 1-2 Thessalonians by Daniel R. Hyde (EP Books, 2015).

“Rev. Hyde has produced a work that can help aid pastors as they prepare to preach through 1-2 Thessalonians…”

“It is a homiletical book, and it uses verses and themes in I-II Thessalonians as a launchpad to teach Christians how to live, particularly in relation to their local church… I found the book to be edifying.”

“This is a good resource to have when studying 1 & 2 Thessalonians or having it as a reading companion if you are going through these books in your daily Bible reading.”
Reviewer: Chris Land

“So I guess that would be my one word description of this book: pastoral. In that way, it will serve pastors in demonstrating how to handle a text in a pastoral manner and believers of all occupations in being faithfully shepherded though 1 and 2 Thessalonians. And, if you are able to get an unbeliever to spend time with a few of these sermons, they will hear the Gospel presented and an urgent, loving, forceful call to repentance and faith. This is a good book for any who would take up and read.”
Reviewer: Josh Skinner

From the Pen of Pastor Paul by Daniel Hyde is a personal and practical commentary on the books of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. This resource is beneficial to pastor and congregational member alike.”
Reviewer: Theron St. John

“In my opinion, this book will be a blessing to all in the church. It will bless pastors in that it will remind them of their calling and challenge them to faithfulness. It will bless congregants by feeding their souls with sound biblical teaching and motivating them to pursue their sanctification.”

“Read it expectantly, hungrily, attentively, faithfully and obediently and it will do you good.”
Reviewer: Alan Davey

“I do believe that the author has given us a concise, helpful, and biblically faithful book to help us better understand these 2 often forgotten books of the New Testament. If you’re looking for something to help you better understand and/or teach those books, I believe this would be a helpful volume to add to your shelf.”

“…it’s good enough that I want a pencil with me while I’m reading it, in order to underline or mark parts I like.”
Reviewer: Melissa Merritt
Rating: 4 Stars

“Rev. Hyde’s book is a very helpful guide to these letters… It is always a delight to read an accessible commentary by an author whom you know has the skills, apparent piety / character, depth and breadth of knowledge, and other necessary attributes to open up the text in greater fullness.”
Reviewer: Doug Wallace
Rating: 5 Stars

“The book has simple goals, but it accomplishes them well… a helpful little book which would be useful to anyone seeking to better grasp this portion of God’s Word.”
Reviewer: Ben Franks
Rating: 4 Stars

“This book is essentially a commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, but the tone in which it is written is more conversational than academic/scholarly (which makes sense because it originated from a sermon series), thereby making it more accessible to the “average” reader. That is not to say that the more studious individual will not find profit in the content.”
Reviewer: Joe Westbrook

“I would love to read more books by Hyde in the future… a great resource to have in your library.”

Praise for From the Pen of Pastor Paul:

“The best commentaries on New Testament Epistles are often those that were born the same way as the Epistles themselves: out of the womb of real pastoral concern and ministry. That is what you find in this highly readable book on 1 and 2 Thessalonians. It has an aroma of authenticity about it. Read it and you will sense the heart of the apostle Paul for the 1st century church brought with fresh power into the 21st century.”
-Dr. Conrad Mbewe Pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church and Chancellor of the African Christian University, Lusaka, Zambia

“Danny Hyde unpacks the teaching of Paul’s letters to theThessalonians with a keen eye on the text, a sure grip on the witness of the scriptures as a whole, an awareness of the history of interpretation in the church, and above all with a pastoral heart for people. I warmly commend this stimulating exposition.”
-Dr. Lee Gatiss, Director of the Church Society, Cambridge.

From the Foreword by David F Wells:
I welcome this fine book. I appreciate the fact that Melvin Tinker has gone to the heart of the matter, to the very center of our faith. Evangelical faith is never going to be renewed by better marketing techniques, or more cultural accommodations, slicker presentations, or better business acumen. It will be renewed only when our knowledge of God is deepened, our walk with him becomes more genuine, our faith more authentic, and our churches more biblical. This is exactly what this book calls for. It sets up the doctrinal structure of Christian faith and lays out with great clarity the truth that these doctrines declare. And he shows that as pressing, and sometimes as novel as our challenges seem to be today, they are actually the recurring challenges that God s people have faced in every generation. Here, though, he deals with those challenges from within the biblical period and lays out the biblical answers. If we would but listen we might be quite surprised at the results! We would see the gospel making inroads into our Western world, the Church finding new life, and Christians living with greater confidence and more hope. May it indeed be so!

Praise For A Lost God in a Lost World:

“Addressing the confusion of modern life, Melvin Tinker offers a sure guide to both the crisis of our time and the way to confront and overcome it.”
-Dr Gerald Bray, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University

“A Lost God in a Lost World delivers cultural reflection and biblical insight in a highly accessible manner.”
-Dr Tim Chester, tutor with the Acts 29 Oak Hill Academy

The Martyrs of Malatya: Martyred for the Messiah in Turkey Book Cover The Martyrs of Malatya: Martyred for the Messiah in Turkey

On April 18, 2007, three men gave their lives for Jesus Christ. Two Turkish Christians and one German . . . began their day simply wanting to spend time with local men they thought genuinely wanted to study the Bible. Instead, five hostile young men met their kindness and hospitality with betrayal and treachery.

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on The Martyrs of Malatya: Martyred for the Messiah in Turkey (EP Books, 2015). Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“This is a book that encourages us to understand the Church universal as being all Christian brothers and sisters throughout time and space — realizing that having our political candidate lose (which is often then greatest suffering of a Christian in the United States) is not such a hardship as many are suffering and now wear the white robes of martyrs, waiting for the return of Christ.”
Reviewer: Peter Butler
Rating: 5 Stars

“Our routine day-to-day activities distract us from the greater picture of our lives. Biographers show us that our lives are much more meaningful than we often realize. And as significant as the martyrdom of Necati, Uğur, and Tilmann was, their lives were even more significant. It is hoped that their deaths will result in more people coming to Christ than before. I hope that their lives, as recorded in this book, will result in more believers taking a bold stand for the gospel.”

Martyrs of Malatya by James Wright opened my eyes to the deaths that happen in other countries in relation to Christianity.”
Reviewer: Tylyn Einhorn
Rating: 4 Stars

“Their martyrdom ranks with all the great saints whose lives were taken because of their testimony in Christ. Faithfulness, Jesus said, will come with suffering and persecution in this world – to test our faith, the faith of others, and to provide and example to others of the love of Christ. While the lives of these three men might fade from the pages of history, they will never fade from the book of life and the pages of eternity. And the mark they left in Turkey needs today, 8 years after this tragedy, to be remembered not just in Turkey, but around the world. May we learn to love our enemies as they loved theirs…”
Reviewer: Todd Wilson

“This book will open your eyes to the awareness of what is going on around the world to Christians and will drive you to your knees in praying for the families affected by these events.”
Reviewer: Theron St. John
Rating: 4 Stars

“I have been encouraged and challenged by what I’ve read. It was a stark reminder that martyrdom is not just something that happened in the past, but it is something that still happens even today. May the Lord keep us all faithfully to the end and may He come quickly!”
Reviewer: Chris Ho
Rating: 4 Stars

“Thank you James Wright for telling the story of these three faithful martyrs of the Faith, may their story inspire all of us to be faithful even to death!”
Reviewer: Alex Houston
Rating: 5 Stars

“This account will open any Christian’s eyes to the love that must be displayed for the work of the Gospel.”
Reviewer: Jeanie Schwagerman
Rating: 4 Stars

“I recommend this book. It is for us in our Western countries an extraordinary story. But for many in this world it is very, very ordinary. How we long for the day when men will no longer believe it is appropriate to kill in the name of their god. Or politics. Or money. Or ideology. Or…”
Reviewer: Alan Davey

“This is a powerful testimony of an event which should not be allowed to occur. I am grateful to these men and their families for their convictions, and I believe this book will open the eyes of many who read it.”

Instead, five hostile young men met their kindness and hospitality with betrayal and treachery.

Very few followers of Christ in the rest of the world heard the story. Lost in the flood of news in our information age, it appeared to be just another senseless murder. But the deaths of Necati Aydin, Ug ur Yuksel and Tilmann Geske, while perhaps ignored or quickly forgotten even among Christians around the world, continue to speak. They proclaim the truth that there are still those among us committed to witnessing to the gospel in difficult locations. They speak loudly of love for Christ and obedience to Him. They testify above the din about their commitment to share Jesus own experience of betrayal and sacrifice that purchased salvation for people from every tongue, tribe and nation.
