The In-Between Blog Tour

Shaun Tabatt —  December 4, 2013

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for The In-Between: Embracing the Tension Between Now and the Next Big Thing by Jeff Goins. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“I have read and reviewed a couple of this author’s works, and really enjoy his easygoing writing style. He is a young person who writes well for young people. His narrative storytelling witticisms are a pleasure to read. His ability to see beyond his years is refreshing.”
Reviewer: Beverly Terry (beverlylynnt.wordpress.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“The message of this book is to get us to enjoy our wait. When we are rushing to the next big thing we fail to appreciate what is in front of us now. Furthermore waiting is not a static place. It is a place where we are changed: our faith deepens, our vision is clarified, and we discover who we are and who we are becoming.”
Reviewer: James Matichuk (thoughtsprayersandsongs.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“This book has taught me to have a different perspective in how I should use my down time in life and find ways to put it to better use. I look forward to those waiting periods for the process of my life because I know God has some great things in store for my life.”
Reviewer: Charolette Ragsdale (charoletteragsdale.wordpress.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“Goins does not really write a book, though. Just as with his other works Wrecked and his blog, Goins tells stories. He tells great stories and draws wisdom from them.”
Reviewer: Doug Hibbard (DougHibbard.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“I did enjoy listening to it because in a sense it was encouraging and refreshing to see the In-between moments of our lives in this perspective, as Goins delivers. According to Goins, life is waiting and in the waiting we become!”
Reviewer: Ann Beaulieu (annlbeaulieu.com)
Rating: 3 Stars

“Jeff Goins was like you, living a normal life, struggling to find “the next big thing.” We are all looking for “the next big thing.” The thing that will change our lives, rock our world, revolutionize the way we think. The problem is, those “big things” don’t happen all too often.”
Reviewer: Dolly Bigelow (dollybigelow.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“The audiobook was beautifully read by Jeff, not often do we get the very author’s voice reading his own work.  The pace with which Jeff read his book was beneficial for me, considering that sometimes a faster pace leaves me in the dust.  Overall, I was very pleased that the very point of the book to slow down and resonate with the time in-between was applied by the very author who read the book.  I would even recommend that by listening to this book you will be able to digest its contents even better.”
Reviewer: Spencer Cummins (spencerdeancummins.blogspot.com)
Rating: 4 Stars

“Life is not about achievements alone, it’s more about how we have live it. We live only once, live it to the best by enjoying it moment by moment… This is a great audio book to listen and Jeff’s voice is pleasant. As the author himself reads this book, it adds so much value for the content. I highly recommend this book for anyone.”
Reviewer: Amal Nadarajah (its-a-blessed-day.blogspot.in)
Rating: 5 Stars

“As Christians, we wait for our Savior’s return. Much of life is waiting. So how do you wait? Imagine Goins sitting across the table over coffee telling you about his real life experiences and the gleanings reaped from them.”
Reviewer: Mike Tiede (VickiTiede.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“In today’s culture…both business & religion, people are consumed with vision-casting. There is a great need for vision-casting and holding vision before us often, but there is a pitfall in that, which is looking ahead, while missing out on now. This memoir helps you see the now.”
Reviewer: Louis Zinc (louiszinc.tumblr.com)

The In-Between blog tour is a first of its kind here at Cross Focused Reviews as we’re going to be offering a limited number of reviewers the opportunity to try bi-modal learning. Essentially we’d like you to read through the book while listening to the audiobook at the same time. If you’d be willing to give that a try, then you’ll want to select “book + audiobook” on the sign up form. If that is not of interest to you, then you should choose audiobook.

The In-Between by Jeff GoinsAbout the Book:
We’re an “instant gratification” generation, but the trouble is, most change happens gradually.

Most of us spend our lives searching and longing for something more than what is in front of us. Whether it’s traveling abroad or chasing cheap (or expensive) thrills, we’re all looking for medicine to satisfy our restlessness. And, so often, we’re looking in the wrong place.

The In-Between is a call for all of us to accept the importance that waiting plays in our lives. In this spiritual memoir, Jeff Goins reveals the unexpected good that came from his times of waiting. And he encourages us to embrace the extraordinary nature of the ordinary and enjoy the daily mundane, what lies in between the “major” moments.

Moments of breakthrough are not where life’s greatest transformation happens; the stuff that God uses to shape us often lies in the in-between. It’s the bus stops and layovers and DMV lines and moments of unintentional pause that force us to become better people.

That’s not to say there aren’t moments of epiphany. There are. It’s just that most of us find ourselves living somewhere in the in-between. Learning to live in this tension, to be content in these moments of waiting, may be our greatest struggle…and our greatest opportunity to grow.

Praise for The In-Between:

According to Jeff Goins, life is more about waiting than we’d like. We try to avoid it at all costs. We linger over a past we can’t repeat (or don’t want to) or long for a future we can’t reach. Either way we are not present to what is happening now. And that is precisely where the important stuff is happening. This book is a powerful reminder that we must embrace the ‘long game’ of life, if we are to experience the love, joy, and peace we seek.
Michael Hyatt, New York Times Bestselling Author, Former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers

In the past few years I’ve had the honor of watching Jeff Goins transition from a writer into a thought leader and one of the most exciting next generation voices. In this book, you’ll see why and perhaps even more importantly how he did it.

Wrecked by Jeff GoinsThis week bloggers are participating in an audiobook review blog tour for Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life by Jeff Goins (Moody Publishers, 2012). This special blog tour is in partnership with ChristianAudio. If you’re a book review blogger, you should consider joining the ChristianAudio Reviewers Program.  Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“This audio book opened my eyes to myself and to God. It was a wonderful reminder and call to step out of myself and my own limitations. God used Wrecked to remind me that faith is brave. Faith – that He can do more than I can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). And He will use my mind, my body, and my mouth to do it because Jesus’ Holy Spirit lives in me waiting to continue His work.”
Jennifer White (jenniferowhite.com)

“It is one of a few books that I want to read over again, in case I have missed something or a challenge that I need to think about again.”
David Clark (blog.dw7.co.uk)

“There is a wave of Christian writers emerging to usher in the next generation of those truly living to love like God loves. Jeff Goins vividly portrays this message in Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life.”
Skye Berger (skyeberger.com)

“I enjoy many books but there are only a few I wish I had written myself. This is one of those books.”
Gina Elder (www.onemomsguide.com)

““Of course!” I thought in reflection after listening to this audio several times. It was the first time I had heard these thoughts voiced in terms of being wrecked. But it made sense. Those of us who have lived through some kind of perceptual shift may have called it an epiphany or “crossing the threshold”. We know it as a life changing experience. We would have felt refreshed or renewed…recharged…or in the author’s words “wrecked and reformed”. I could think of several people immediately whom I believe would enjoy listening to this audio book. I highly recommend it!”
Beverly Terry (beverlylynnt.wordpress.com)

“I would summarize this work as the guidebook to rising above, chasing the adventure, living the dream, and loving hard through service. It is one of those special books that after you listen to it, you are never the same.”
Sarah Jean Cobb (sarahjeancobb.blogspot.com)

“If you’ve found yourself wondering if there is more to this life? If you’ve felt unsatisfied with your own plan, I cannot recommend this book enough. Though Jeff is a young writer and Dad, he’s had the incredible privilege of discovering some of God’s wondrous truths. He writes for his generation, but if we’re willing to listen, the message applies to all ages.”
Paula Whidden (www.faithfulchoices.com)

“In listening to this book, I found myself identifying with the outer edges of the wrecked state, but not yet having been fully affected—not yet fully wrecked. This is why I say I live in a state of near-wrecked-ness… As far as this audiobook from ChristianAudio goes, I highly recommend it. It was especially beneficial to hear it read by the author, as he was able to instill his own passion and intent into each word he wrote as he read it aloud.”
Haelie Heard (tonotdecideistodecide.blogspot.com)

“Wrecked by Jeff Goins is a book that talks about building a mindset, a lifestyle, that is not all about you. Learning confidence in the face of uncertainty, chaos, & insecurity. Navigating the journey of life without a map & maybe even without the encouragement of family and friends. It’s about craving the taste for doing something with your life that will last & matter.”
Raye Cage (rockstarlifestyleblog.com)

“The reader will be stretched, drawn and at times all out bewildered by the stirring within their heart for the lost, marginalized, and the hurting. If you are willing to be challenged and begin the move from wherever you are to a place with more Jesus- get ready to be Wrecked!”
Nancy Bouwens (www.simplyabundantlife.com)

“I think everyone can take something away from this book. I know too many people of all ages who have settled into their comfortable lives and are letting the world pass them by… I liked listening to Jeff read his book, but I wanted to highlight and underline and make notes, so I’m going to have to buy the book and read it again.”
Diane Beason (pdianebeason.wordpress.com)

“He was quoting Yoda one minute, Jesus the next. It’s definitely worth reading, or in my case, listening to. Be prepared though, if you’re anything like me, you’re going to be doing a lot of pausing and thinking (and writing quotes and thoughts). Most of all, be prepared, much like the tortoise on the cover, to get your thinking (and hopefully, your doing) turned upside down.”
Florence Bell (www.justwriting.net)

“This book is a manifesto, calling you to live beyond yourself. It asks you to be willing to see the world through someone else’s eyes all the while knowing you may never be the same again.”
Emily Buller (whispersofwonder.com)

“Jeff encourages the reader to allow themselves to be wrecked & ready to move past the shock in order to make a life-changing difference. I recommend you see for yourself what Goins is talking about and pick up a copy of Wrecked for yourself.”
Anson Sexton (ansonsexton.com)

“Once you’ve become “wrecked”, you will never be the same. Personally I think you will also be extremely thankful for the “wrecked” experience and any pain that came with it. I will go so far as to say you wouldn’t even entertain the idea of going back; it has no draw on you.”
John Gagne (renesramblings.wordpress.com)

“I recommend Wrecked. It will challenge you and stir your heart. Jeff Goins writes with honesty and energy. Wrecked will carry you right along. So what are you waiting for? Get Wrecked!”
Derek Griz (derekgriz.com)

Wrecked isn’t about feeding the homeless, taking mission trips to foreign lands, or serving at your local rescue mission. Wrecked is about YOU and what happens in your life when you feed the homeless, take mission trips to foreign lands or serve at the local rescue mission. It is about living out our purpose whether that purpose is to raise your children in your hometown or serve others children around the globe.”
Catherine Daugherty (praycookblog.com)

Wrecked isn’t the story of a life destroyed by drug abuse or immoral living. It’s not a prodigal son story. It’s the story of self-discovery by seeing outside oneself.”
Randy Cantrell (bulanetwork.com)

“I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was inspired. The time flew by. It is an easy read (or in my case, listen) but I would be wrong to say it was a light read. Could you call something light that feels like a punch in the gut? :)”
Roger Leonhardt (reformedreader.blogspot.com)

“I certainly think Mr. Goins has a good heart, a great deal of potential, & that this first book regarding something other than writing is a good start. I’d like to see him revisit “Wrecked” in light of 20 additional years or so of experience. I’ll be watching his endeavors with interest, & I hope I live long enough to see him publish “Beyond Wrecked”. I think it’ll be superb.”
Jackie McBride (www.brighter-vision.com)

“It’s a book for those times where we experience something of the brokenness of the world and become broken by it ourselves, what Goins calls getting “wrecked”. It’s a book asnwering the question – what do I do now – now I’ve seen how the world really is?”
Alice Buckley (www.playontheword.com)

“Through tales of his activities among the down-and-out, Jeff keeps explaining how he’s trying hard to bring lasting change to an ocean of indifference. In the end, he keeps flipping turtles right side up, in an effort to save them (my interpretation of the cover image), only to learn in the end that he is one of them.
And so are we.”
Lee Smith (leesmithnd.com)

“If you just want to “help others to find yourself” (a phrase the author uses), to find meaning and fulfillment in your life, then this book is for you.”
Becky Pliego (www.beckypliego.com)
