Irenaeus by Simonetta CarrThank you for your interest in reviewing Irenaeus. This blog tour is now full. You can see our current list of available review books here: LINK.

Irenaeus is remembered for his work in helping the church to preserve the faith handed on by the apostles and to defend it when it was attacked. In this simply written and beautifully illustrated book, Simonetta Carr shows young readers the difficulties the early church faced and how Irenaeus taught Christians to discern truth from error by listening to the Bible. To Christians, the lessons Irenaeus taught are as important today as they were in his time.

Author and Illustrator:

Simonetta Carr was born in Italy and has lived and worked in different cultures. A former elementary school teacher, she home-schooled her eight children for many years. She has written for newspapers and magazines around the world and has translated the works of several Christian authors into Italian. Presently, she lives in San Diego with her husband, Thomas, and family. She is a member and Sunday school teacher at Christ United Reformed Church, Santee, California.

Matt Abraxas has traveled from California to France, studying different approaches to art. He enjoys creating and teaching art and currently exhibits his work at the SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder, Colorado. Matt lives with his wife, Rebecca, and two sons, Zorba and Rainer, in Lafayette, Colorado.

Endorsements:

“Writing church history in a way that appeals to children is not at all easy, but Simonetta Carr has done it time and again with these gorgeous books on various figures from the glorious company of believers who have gone before us. And this new one on Irenaeus is no exception. We know his thought well because of his literary works, but much of his life is in the shadows. Simonetta handles this adroitly, however, and the result is an excellent presentation for children of a key figure in the history of God’s people. Well done, Simonetta!”

Michael A. G. Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I love Simonetta Carr’s books. I know of no other volumes on Christian history that are so wonderfully accessible and beautifully illustrated. Now Simonetta brings to us the story of the second-century pastor and defender of orthodoxy Irenaeus of Lyon. The author skillfully weaves together historical facts and biblical meditations to produce a compelling account. I lament that my children are now too old to place on my lap so that I might read to them this excellent book about a most excellent man.”

Todd Pruitt, pastor, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, Virginia, and cohost of Mortification of Spin

Reformation Women: Sixteenth-Century Figures Who Shaped Christianity's Rebirth by Rebecca VanDoodeward

Thank you for your interest in reviewing Reformation Women. This blog tour is now full. You can see our current list of available review books here: LINK.

Women are an essential element in church history. Just as Deborah, Esther, and the New Testament Marys helped shape Bible history, so the women of the Reformed church have helped to make its history great. In Reformation Women, Rebecca Vandoodewaard introduces readers to twelve sixteenth-century women who are not as well known today as contemporaries like Katie Luther and Lady Jane Grey. Providing an example to Christians today of strong service to Christ and His church, these influential, godly women were devoted to Reformation truth, in many cases provided support for their husbands, practiced hospitality, and stewarded their intellectual abilities. Their strength and bravery will inspire you, and your understanding of church history will become richer as you learn how God used them to further the Reformation through their work and influence.

Praise for Reformation Women:

“The modern resurgence of Reformed theology, publishing, and ministry is not just for those with beards. Nor has it ever been, for a healthy Calvinism has always seen women making incredible contributions. With crisp prose showing how biblical femininity resulted in a strength among a dozen Reformed women that was both “tough and ladylike,” Rebecca VanDoodewaard has done all the church—both men and women—a tremendous service in providing this work. She brings the lesser-known ladies from Good’s original Famous Women of the Reformed Church alive for a new generation.”
—Barry York, professor of pastoral theology and dean of faculty, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary

“When this book arrived on my doorstep, I was anxious to read it. Few accessible works exist on the heroines of the Reformation, so I read these biographies with the desire to learn. But I walked away with more than learning; I was challenged and inspired. I have new heroes of the faith, and so will every Christian who reads this wonderful collection. Thank you, Rebecca Vandoodewaard, for introducing many of us to these saintly women and sharing their testimonies— testimonies that can’t help but encourage every saint to live more for Christ.”
—Jason Helopoulos, associate pastor, University Reformed Church, Lansing, Michigan

Reformation Women is a book of rare quality and interest as Rebecca VanDoodewaard opens up a whole new dimension in the ongoing story of Christ’s church. We learn of the enormous contribution made by twelve women to the progress of the Reformation in the sixteenth century. Here we have women from diverse backgrounds—some of whose names we can hardly pronounce—whom God raised up and used in a remarkable way. You will be humbled and inspired by these pages and long to serve God better in whatever sphere you have been placed.”
—Faith Cook, author of Lady Jane Grey: Nine Day Queen of England and several other Christian biographies and historical books

About the Author: Rebecca VanDoodewaard is a wife, mother, and author of several books.
