“Keller and Allberry do a great job in leading the reader through the pages of the Bible. This book is not meant to take the place of deep Bible study, but to give everyone a taste in reading and studying the Bible on a deeper level… I am looking forward to see more devotionals like this one.”

“I do recommend this book for anyone desiring to study the Bible. Personally, my church is going through the book of Romans this year and I have found the section on Romans to be quite helpful for that. I am thankful for good tools like this that help you faithfully and correctly study the Bible.”
Reviewer: Angela Parsley

“Keller and Allberry say that obedience to God is a sign that we have genuinely been saved and that not all who profess to be Christians are actual Christians. I think that the two ideas run contrary to each other, at least in terms of the psychological effect that they can have on the believer. The first idea is comforting, the second, not so much. The tension is understandable, though, considering the different biblical texts with which Keller and Allberry are interacting, and the co-existing themes of grace and practical righteousness within the Bible.”

Explore by the Book is a wonderful concept that is best used with the hardback edition of the book and a physical copy of your Bible open.”

“As far as a devotional is concerned I think this is an excellent option. Structurally it stands out from most other devotionals in that it is hardbound and yet contains the blank ruled page for the reader to interact with the day’s text. It also stands out from many other devotionals in its doctrinal emphasis and pastoral application. I personally think this would be an excellent book to use as a family and would only require a quick “on the fly” simplification of a few words or a kid-friendly interpretation here and there for any younger children.”

“Perhaps the greatest value of the book is the help it offers in thinking about how scripture should be understood and applied. The model employed might be applied to any Biblical text. Praise for Bible Studies on Mark:

“Though sometimes neglected as if it were an abridged version of Matthew, the Gospel of Mark opens up before us beautiful snapshots of our King in action. Bill Boekestein’s crisp writing, practical orientation, and engaging questions make this book an ideal guide for studying the good news of the kingdom of God.”
-Rev. Joel Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“The Gospel of Mark is all about that—the Gospel. In this short guide through this shortest of Gospels, Bill Boekestein opens up for us the person and work of Jesus Christ, who is the Gospel incarnate. You will grow in your knowledge, love, and desire to serve Jesus through these pages.”

Product Description

If you are a Christian, you have personally experienced the joy of sins forgiven and reconciliation with God. Forgiveness, writes Stanley Gale, “is a divine accomplishment to be savored and offered to others.” Forgiveness is the most basic of Christian graces, yet the topic raises many questions, including these:

  • Is it biblical to “forgive and forget”?
  • Why do we need to confess our sins if they are already forgiven?
  • How do we actually go about forgiving someone?
  • Does the Bible give a place to forgiving ourselves?
  • What does life look like after forgiveness?

In Finding Forgiveness, you will discover practical answers to these questions and many others. With pastoral warmth, the author will help you see how the awe of the gospel dawns anew for those who apply forgiveness and experience the healing of a burdened spirit or broken relationship.

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Finding Forgiveness: Discovering the Healing Power of the Gospel by Stanley D. Gale (Reformation Heritage Books, 2016)

Martin Luther Book Cover Martin Luther
Christian Biographies for Young Readers
Simonetta Carr
Biography
Reformation Heritage Books
October 25, 2016
Hardcover
32

Five hundred years ago, a monk named Martin Luther wrote ninety-five questions, hoping to start a discussion about sin and repentance at the University of Wittenberg in Germany. In a few months those questions had stirred the nation; a few years later, the continent. Today we know that those questions changed the course of both the Western church and world history. In this volume for children, Simonetta Carr tells the compelling story of this father of the Protestant Reformation, tracing his quest for peace with God, his lifelong heroic stand for God’s truth, and his family life and numerous accomplishments. The Reformer’s greatest accomplishment, she writes, “has been his uncompromising emphasis on the free promise of the gospel.”

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Simonetta Carr’s new book Martin Luther from the amazing Christian Biographies for Young Readers series.

“Simonetta’s books are so well crafted that it’s delightful to simply hold them and explore the texture and artistry within and without. Still, it is what Simonetta has captured amongst her precise and enlightening writing that is fascinating for all ages.”
Reviewer: Lesley Eischen
Rating: 5 Stars

“All in all, I really liked this book. I really appreciated that she does not make Luther come across as a hero to be worshiped but rather as a man, saved by God’s grace and not his own merit, who was used by God to bring people to a correct knowledge of the Gospel and to point them to the Word of God as the only authority.”
Reviewer: Sarah Lambert
Rating: 5 Stars

“Simonetta Carr’s Christian Biographies for Young Readers: Martin Luther is an excellent resource for teaching children about a key contributor of the Protestant Reformation and is a great conversation starter on what is truly means to be a Christian, justified by faith in Christ alone.”
Reviewer: Theron St. John
Rating: 5 Stars

“We are told our stories matter. Yet so often, it is the current day stories we share, forgetting to delve back into our history. Our church history is particularly important to share for it is the way by which our our children learn about heroes of the faith and hold onto biblical truths. Simonetta Carr writes about such heroes in a way that is sure to draw in, and keep, the attention of children…. This is a hard covered book with pages beautifully printed making this a wonderful book to gift to any child or school library.”
Reviewer: Joanne Viola
Rating: 5 Stars

“Whether you know absolutely nothing about Luther and this is your first introduction, or whether this is the tenth book you’ve read on the man and it simply serves as a reminder in a beautifully illustrated way for you to teach your children or others about him… I would encourage you to get yourself a copy of this book, as well as the other 10 volumes in the series. You won’t be disappointed.”
Reviewer: Zack Ford

“For a 64-page children’s biography, the detail is excellent and, more importantly, accurate… In all, I highly recommend not only Martin Luther but the entire series.”
Reviewer: Doug Hibbard

“I enjoy this book’s approach to exploring both well- and lesser-known information about Luther and his story. I’m delighted to add Martin Luther to our collection of Christian Biographies for Young Readers.”
Reviewer: Ann Hibbard
Rating: 4 Stars

“I’ve reviewed some of the biographies in the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series, and this is another great addition. These books make important figures in church history very accessible to young readers. I also appreciate the author’s honesty about their failings, such as Luther’s anti-semitic writings, briefly mentioned in “Did You Know?”. We should honor the saints of old but recognize that they were fallible human beings in need of a Savior, too… I highly recommend Martin Luther and the whole series.”
Reviewer: Persis Lorenti
Rating: 5 Stars

“These biographies are wonderfully done. I have had the opportunity to review two prior to this one and as usual, they do not disappoint! They are filled with just enough information to promote a good biographical sketch for the young reader.”

“Long after my grandchildren are grown, I’ll still be reading this series of Christian Biographies For Young Readers… a good addition to any homeschooler’s library.”
Reviewer: William Perkins

“Simonetta Carr’s series of biographies is a hard set to define. The books are aimed at children, but they are informative and utterly unique… Grab this one, or any of them, and you will be greatly pleased.
Reviewer: Josh Skinner
Rating: 5 Stars

“Whether you are looking for a gift for a child, seeking a volume for homeschool history, or simply building your library, this volume is worth purchasing. It is historically accurate, delightfully illustrated, with an appropriately critical tone. It represents both a celebration of the recovery of the gospel with a recognition of the pervasiveness of human sin, even among our heroes. Reformation Heritage Books should be applauded for continuing the series and publishing excellent children’s volumes like this one.”
Reviewer: Andrew Spencer

“I wish I had read more biographies when I was a kid. Actually, I wish I had read more, period. As a Christian parent, I want my kids to learn about my faith, and I pray that one day they will embrace it as their own. By sharing these biographies with them, they learn not only from my example, but from the examples of believers throughout history.”

“Simonetta has done a great job bringing Luther to life and I was so appreciative that the great Reformation narrative at the center of Luther’s life wasn’t lost here. To see this tormented monk transformed by the good news of the Gospel and to see him stand firm to reform the Church was exciting to read, and exciting to share with my children. As we read this book, my children could clearly see the need for reformation, and could clearly appreciate that it was God who brought “darkness out of light.””

Christ All Sufficient: An Exposition of Colossians Book Cover Christ All Sufficient: An Exposition of Colossians
Brian G. Hedges
Shepherd Press
September 30, 2016

A thousand schemes and to-do lists may threaten to enslave you, but Christ died to free you from them, and he is enough.

Paul’s letter to the Colossians is short, but it delivers a roundhouse kick to religion as it reveals the complete and inexhaustible sufficiency of Jesus Christ. Jesus really is everything we need! Paul reveled in the good news that had captured his heart. He never got over it and never moved beyond it. He knew that no one could advance beyond the essential message of the crucified, risen, and exalted Christ. And he didn’t want anyone to retreat from it.

Who should read this book?

  • Pastors, seminary students, Sunday school teachers, and small group leaders who want a Christ-focused, gospel-rich study of Colossians
  • Anyone weary of the hard yoke of legalism or the empty promises of man-made religion
  • Anyone thirsty for the simple, life-transforming truth that all we need is found in Christ alone

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Christ All Sufficient: An Exposition of Colossians by Brian G. Hedges.

He has provided the perfect balance of devotional thoughts and sound theological insight. If you are searching for a commentary on the book of Colossians, I highly recommend you look no further than Brian Hedges’ excellent effort. “Hedges leaves no room for formulaic approaches or legalistic methodologies for sanctification. The gospel, from start to finish, is an integral component of Hedges’ understanding of the Christian life and that shines through his writing in every respect.”

Christ All Sufficient is an exposition on the book of Colossians. It would be a great resource for the next time I read through the book of Colossians – to have it side by side and consider what another author thought and wrote.”

“I believe there is a great need for more resources like the one Hedges has provided here. There is in this exposition a laser focus on the text, which as I noted is rare to find in commentaries.”

Christ All Sufficient provides clarity on the meaning of Colossians, but goes even further by providing challenging application, as well. This makes the book more than a resource for teachers of the Word, but not less than that. ”

“What I enjoyed most about Christ All Sufficient was Hedges’ balance of presenting the great commentary while remaining relatable and easy-to-understand. This is not a commentary meant only for theologians or pastors who are well steeped in systematic theology. Hedges does an excellent job of discussing relevant theological issues such as the Colossian heresy concisely and wisely for the reader who has not received training or done in-depth study on New Testament or historical theology. He is very thorough in taking each phrase of each verse and presenting readers with relevant instruction and explanation.”
