The Resurrection Fact: Responding to Modern Critics Book Cover The Resurrection Fact: Responding to Modern Critics

As the team did with the book, Making the Case For Christianity (CPH), Drs. Bombaro and Francisco bring together a variety of contemporary Lutheran apologists to respond to a wide array of challenges to the heart of the Christian faith.

Each chapter addresses a specific argument from a popular, non-Christian author and offers a clear and concise rebuttal and argument for the resurrection.

The editors have found able representatives from the disciplines of biblical studies, history, philosophy, and the legal profession to write each chapter.

The book is accessible, written for a broad audience, and is ultimately designed to equip its readers for the apologetics task.

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on The Resurrection Fact: Responding to Modern Critics by John J. Bombaro and Adam S. Francisco.

The Resurrection Fact: Responding to Modern Critics is a compendium detailing the elements and weaknesses of the enemy’s assaults and the reasoning that gives thinking Christians more confidence in this core aspect of our theology”

“Anyone interested in Christian apologetics would be wise to become familiar with presuppositional apologetics.”
Reviewer: Chris Lawson

“This readable account serves well as a basic introduction to apologetics for any Christian regardless of the level of prior knowledge. It serves pastors as a guide to encourage and equip his flock to bear witness to the Resurrection. This book serves any reader who wishes to read an account concerning the reasons Christians believe.”

“The book combines scholarly research and a popular reading style so both academics and laypeople may readily understand the contents. Will be an excellent future reference for more study.”
Reviewer: Michael Taylor

“Overall this book provides a good defense of the resurrection with each contributors demonstrating attention to details. I think this book would be a good one to place in the hands of students today as many will be confronted with objections that parallel those dealt with in this book.”
Reviewer: Steven Dressen

“Throughout the book they not only reveal the facts, as discernible by a historian, but deal with the underlying presuppositions of the skeptical in analyzing the facts. The case made for the resurrection I believe is compelling.”

“The book is well-written and a relatively quick read, at least if the reader has a reasonable familiarity with theology and theological terms.”
Reviewer: Joe Westbrook

“Because the resurrection is the center of Christian faith, Satan will continue to attack it. The goal will remain the same, but the approach will be different. “The Resurrection Fact: Responding to Modern Critics” comes onto scene to address the challenge.”

Is God Just a Distant Concept? An Award-Winning Religion Correspondent is Convinced the Answer is No and Explores the Possible Relationship with Our Creator

Fox News Religion Correspondent Lauren Green uses her wealth of stories, vast network of contacts, and her own extensive study of theology to take the reader on a unique journey of spiritual discovery. With few female authors writing in the field of theology, Green provides an important perspective to all who wish to move closer to not only a deeper relationship with God but an understanding of what makes that possible.

Green gathers insight from some amazing guides along the way, through personal conversations with some of the leading minds in the world on the topic of Christianity. These include:

  • Timothy Keller
  • John Piper
  • Alister McGrath
  • William Lane Craig
  • John Lennox
  • Sir John Polkinghorne
  • Amy Beckman
  • Elizabeth Lev
  • … and many more

Is God simply an accessory that we carry with us? Something similar to what we might download from a music site to suit our personal tastes—a personal assistant in a way? Or is He His law, His structure, and His authoritative Word contained in the Holy Scripture, an objective reality to which you daily shape your life? If we believe or know we should believe that it’s the latter, how do we make this happen? How do we live joyfully under God’s will in a world so drenched in the will of human desire?

Lighthouse Faith explores the heart of the Christian doctrine and a pathway of perceiving God as an interactive hands-on presence; a caring and loving being. The first commandment is a life-giving force loaded with information about the world in which we live. This law stands atop the other nine commandments as a beacon of light, illuminating the created order, just as a lighthouse lamp shines in a darkened space, heralding a way to safety.

This week the Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on Lighthouse Faith: God as a Living Reality in a World Immersed in Fog by Lauren Green (W Publishing Group, 2017)

“This is a challenging book from start to finish and one we all need in these days we are living. One well worth the time to read!”

“This book is her faith journey as she travels over all of God’s creation seeing His work manifest in ways and in places she did not expect. I would recommend this book…”
Reviewer: Dan Doll

“…this book will certainly cause something to stir inside you in such a way that you question the status quo. To the point that you begin to look for the light in your dark night is the point where you begin to understand the journey of people everywhere. They can hear the fog horn and see the light from the water but aren’t sure how to get there. Be that person who points them in the right direction and help them answer their questions in their pursuit of the light. This book will help you do that.”
Reviewer: Don Haflich
Rating: 4 Stars

“The eye of faith stands behind her work and many will benefit from her simple approach and sometimes deeply personal life-lessons.”
Reviewer: Robert Hayton
Rating: 3 Stars

“As a pastor, one of the things I appreciated was the anecdotes scattered throughout to illustrate the points. Her seasoned work as a reporter has given her windows into some incredibly helpful stories that help illustrate many different themes that come up in my preaching. They were consistently helpful, engaging and would give real life examples of why these things matter.”
Reviewer: Aaron Meservey

“As someone who enjoys a book on current issues and theology, I enjoyed this book for primarily two reasons. The first is that Lauren Green writes from a perspective that is greatly influenced by God and His word. Second, her way of writing is inspiring as she uses imagery, symbolism and anecdotes to reel the reader in and while there, hits it home with strong gospel truths.”

“…the book is well written and constantly points you to the master of the seas, Jesus Christ.”

What happens when a former teenage atheist hears God's call to do the impossible--and decides to act on it?

In this riveting true story, Brian Barcelona recounts how, just a few months after graduation, he responded to God's directive and returned to his high school campus to preach the Gospel to the students. He had no training, no resources, and no experience. Just raw passion and obedience.

Suddenly lives began to be changed. Teens from every background were healed of suicidal thoughts, the trauma of physical and sexual abuse, drug addiction, identity crises and much more. Hearts were saved. Entire families were healed. The Jesus Club's numbers grew, and soon other schools joined in. From one simple act of obedience, thousands of teens were, and still are, letting Jesus heal their lives.

And this is only the beginning of the story! God is moving powerfully in our nation's high schools. And if you are willing, you, too, can be part of the revival that is transforming a generation.

"The Jesus Club will ignite within you a greater passion for Jesus and an unstoppable faith to see God move in the lives of students."
-Banning Liebscher, founder and pastor, Jesus Culture

"This book can only be understood as a storyline straight from the pen of the Author of our faith. Read, and watch hope explode in your soul. God's not done with America!"
-Lou Engle, co-founder, TheCall

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on The Jesus Club: Incredible True Stories of How God Is Moving in Our High Schools by Brian Barcelona (Chosen Books, 2017).

“I really enjoyed learning how God has worked through Brian. Thousands of students in both northern California and Los Angeles have become followers of Christ through his ministry. Inspiring stories of the different ways God brought this about fill this book. Gang members, atheists, and ordinary kids alike have turned their lives over to Christ after hearing the good news about Him. The author’s enthusiasm for making this happen in all the high schools in America is exciting, and I highly recommend this easy to read, uplifting 5-star book.”

“This is the generation that we need to get into our churches, to make them into our future leaders.. If one man can turn his obedience to God into a success like this why can’t we all?”
Reviewer: Mary Ann Bell
Rating: 4 Stars

“It’s sad to see so many high schoolers choosing to follow their peers in a direction that does not lead them to Christ. Bombarded with social media and selfish ideas, many adolescents choose a path that exalts self rather than Christ. It was encouraging to read this testimony book, The Jesus Club, where Brian Barcelona tells of the good things the Lord did with a surrendered heart and a group of teenagers.”
Reviewer: Cindy Cook

“God’s usage of Brian Barcelona to minter to youth in their own context gives me renewed strength as I minister to the youth in my own area on their turf in their context.”
Reviewer: Dan Doll

“I loved this book and would recommend it for every youth worker. And I would also recommend it for all believers who want to see where the Holy Spirit is moving right now in America. Students are not all lost and narcissistic instead God is on the move, and I for one want to join Him. You should too.”

The Cross Focused Reviewers share their thoughts on 90 Days in John 14-17, Romans & James by Timothy Keller & Sam Allberry.

“I look forward to working slowly through this book over a 90 day period so I can soak up all of these benefits and more. I couldn’t more highly recommend a 90-day daily devotional!”

“I would personally recommend the Explore by the Book series and specially this volume to anyone looking for a resource to guide them in personal study. The guided but flexible format allows the resource to be tailored to everyone’s learning style and schedule.”
Reviewer: Zach Kendrick
Rating: 4 Stars

“Keller and Allberry do a great job in leading the reader through the pages of the Bible. This book is not meant to take the place of deep Bible study, but to give everyone a taste in reading and studying the Bible on a deeper level… I am looking forward to see more devotionals like this one.”
Reviewer: Chris Land
Rating: 5 Stars

“I do recommend this book for anyone desiring to study the Bible. Personally, my church is going through the book of Romans this year and I have found the section on Romans to be quite helpful for that. I am thankful for good tools like this that help you faithfully and correctly study the Bible.”
Reviewer: Angela Parsley
Rating: 5 Stars

“Keller and Allberry say that obedience to God is a sign that we have genuinely been saved and that not all who profess to be Christians are actual Christians. I think that the two ideas run contrary to each other, at least in terms of the psychological effect that they can have on the believer. The first idea is comforting, the second, not so much. The tension is understandable, though, considering the different biblical texts with which Keller and Allberry are interacting, and the co-existing themes of grace and practical righteousness within the Bible.”

“I highly recommend you grab a copy of 90 Days in John 14-17, Romans, James, or one of the other volumes in this series. You’ll be glad you did!”

“If your Bible study is done with the use of devotionals, you need this one. Brief and to the point…”

“I encourage you to get a copy of this, or any in the series… if you are needing a boost to your devotional life this is a good one because it forces you to get into the Bible for yourself. And when you get into the Bible for yourself the Word of God will do the work of God, conforming you to the image of Jesus.”

Explore by the Book is a wonderful concept that is best used with the hardback edition of the book and a physical copy of your Bible open.”
Reviewer: Bill Pence
Rating: 4 Stars

“As far as a devotional is concerned I think this is an excellent option. Structurally it stands out from most other devotionals in that it is hardbound and yet contains the blank ruled page for the reader to interact with the day’s text. It also stands out from many other devotionals in its doctrinal emphasis and pastoral application. I personally think this would be an excellent book to use as a family and would only require a quick “on the fly” simplification of a few words or a kid-friendly interpretation here and there for any younger children.”
Reviewer: Aaron Cerda
Rating: 4 Stars

“All in all, this looks like a helpful tool for the believer who appreciates some guidance for times of private worship.”
Reviewer: Ben Franks
Rating: 4 Stars

“This devotional is designed to cause the reader to deal with the text of scripture before dealing with the content added by the authors. They want to engage the reader with the words of God and in so doing, want to effect a change of heart as one sees the beauty and clarity of the revelation of God.”
Reviewer: Don Haflich

“This book would make a great gift for someone you know who wants to study the Bible but doesn’t know how, or doesn’t have much time to sit and do a regular study. What a great tool!”
Reviewer: Alex Houston
Rating: 4 Stars

“Keller and Allberry go through the four chapters in John and Romans and James verse-by-verse highlighting important events and topics that will help you apply God’s Word to your life and situation.”
Reviewer: Jill Jones
Rating: 4 Stars

“Perhaps the greatest value of the book is the help it offers in thinking about how scripture should be understood and applied. The model employed might be applied to any Biblical text. In other words, the book helps one understand how to take the raw Biblical text and think about how it should look in one’s life.”
Reviewer: Mark Lugg

“I love the Bible. The upper room discourses & Jesus’ high priestly prayer, the book of Romans and James, contain some of my go-to passages. If you are looking for a devotional or guided study to discover these sections of scripture, this is a good choice.”

Praise for Bible Studies on Mark:

“Though sometimes neglected as if it were an abridged version of Matthew, the Gospel of Mark opens up before us beautiful snapshots of our King in action. Bill Boekestein’s crisp writing, practical orientation, and engaging questions make this book an ideal guide for studying the good news of the kingdom of God.”
-Rev. Joel Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“The Gospel of Mark is all about that—the Gospel. In this short guide through this shortest of Gospels, Bill Boekestein opens up for us the person and work of Jesus Christ, who is the Gospel incarnate. You will grow in your knowledge, love, and desire to serve Jesus through these pages.”
—Rev. Daniel R. Hyde

“Studying the holy Scripture nourishes the humble soul. In this study of the gospel of Mark, Boekestein dishes up a delicious and nutritious spiritual meal. In fact, he often packs more food for the soul into a short paragraph than many others do in an entire page. Take and read… or perhaps I should say, take and enjoy your meal.”

“This is a commentary that does not fit the academic mold because the author was careful to format this as a conversation-based bible study. However, in no way does that diminish the scholarly truths of the Gospel of Mark. But the author was careful to tread in both waters of exposition and application.”
