Spiritual Warfare: A Biblical and Balanced PerspectiveThis week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for Spiritual Warfare: A Biblical and Balanced Perspective by Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura (Reformation Heritage Books, 2014). Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“Every Christian needs to be reminded of the spiritual war going on around them and I know of no better resource that does this as well as this book. I highly recommend this book and pray as you read it that you will grab hold of who you are in Christ, the reality of the war around you and gain urgency in sharing the Gospel with the lost and making disciples to the glory of God.”

“In a day when clever tactics are often replacing biblically sound methodologies for spiritual warfare, Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura provide a needed correction for the believer. Full of sound biblical doctrine, Spiritual Warfare is a book that should find its way on the shelf of every believer. It is more than just another walk through Ephesians 6. Conversely, it demonstrates a holistic understanding of what the Apostle Paul is sharing in that chapter to include providing the believer with a firm grasp on why this topic is important.”
Reviewer: Michael Boling (IntelMin.org)

Spiritual Warfare walks the reader through Ephesians 6:10-20 and examines the armor of God piece by piece. The over-arching theme is that we place ourselves in God’s provisions for the battle, not work up some defense in and of ourselves. Borgman and Ventura are very helpful in this area. At the end of the day we must always remember that, “Christ is higher and far superior to all powers that exist, including every demonic and spiritual power!” We must be ever alert of the battle before us and remember that our strength and victory comes in and through Christ.”

“I now have a new go to book to give to people who have questions about Satan and demons and how they operate today in the 21st century.”

“The authors, Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura, have produced a work that lives up to its title. The book is thoroughly biblical, and it most definitely presents a balanced perspective on spiritual warfare.”

“Even though the book is but 128 pages, you mustn’t let it’s smallness misguide you! In fact these authors have been able to condense the essentials in a less expanded book. Which has proven to be a well-written exegesis book and I would even add, a somewhat verse by verse expository.”

“If you are a student of the bible, a pastor, or someone who lacks an understanding of the God-appointed means by which to resist Satan, then I give this book my highest recommendation. It will be one that I come back to often, both for my benefit and the benefit of others.”

“The authors make it a point to remind readers that warfare is no child’s play. It is serious business. This calls for preparation. It requires discipline to equip oneself. It reminds us again that readiness for war is always necessary. For the moment any of us lets down our guard, the enemy enters in with all kinds of temptations, deceptions, and treacheries.”

“Using Ephesians 6:10-20 as a guide these men unfold scripture in a way that makes it easy to understand, without compromising the message. They remind us that we must stand. We are not allowed to sit idly by as Satan does his best to destroy the lives and ministries of those within the Church. We must put on the armor provided for us by God and having done all, stand.”

“This by far is the best treaty on spiritual warfare that I have read. It is Biblically grounded and theologically sound, never minimizing the battle around us, yet ensuring us of the hope and victory we have in Christ.”
Reviewer: Brandon Lehr (my-livinghope.blogspot.com)

“Securely grounded in Scripture, Borgman and Ventura’s Spiritual Warfare walks the reader through Ephesians 6:10-20, sharing many helpful anecdotes that gives historical context. One aspect of Spiritual Warfare that I especially appreciated was the amount of quotes incorporated by the authors. And for a relatively small book (only 124 pages) that is written in layman terminology, I was impressed by the number of footnotes.”

“Steve Lawson sums up the importance of this book in his Foreword: “The Christian life is not a playground. Rather, it is a battlefield of spiritual warfare.” Therefore, I highly recommend reading Spiritual Warfare because the “mind is a major battlefield,” and this book teaches you how to think and act biblically in a war that is often over-looked.”

Spiritual Warfare is a biblical, accessible and concise introduction to an important intersection between Christian growth and Christian life. Pastoral and constructive in tone, it offers readers a guide as they consider what the Bible teaches about the reality of conflict with spiritual evil. Those who heed the counsel it offers will be vigilant without being fearful, and prepared to act without constant anxiety about the conflict.”

“There is a spiritual battle going on in the hearts and lives of every Christian. This battlefield is a minefield where one wrong step can lead to ruin. Yet, there is hope. In Spiritual Warfare, Pastors Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura offer us a guide through Ephesians 6 that is compelling and ultimately practical in fighting off the wiles of the world, the flesh, and the devil. The study here is Christ-centered, biblically faithful and chalk full of ways that Christians can learn to engage the battle effectively.”

“Taking their lead from Scripture, particularly Ephesians 6: 10-20, the authors expound on the biblical revelation that every true (regenerated, justified, forgiven) Christian is in the midst of a raging but unseen, spiritual war involving intelligent, highly skilled, powerful beings arrayed against one another, but with a final, determinative outcome that is promised, known, and certain.”

“I would add to their sub-title practical, much of the literature being published and presented on the topic of spiritual warfare tends to take you into the arena of pure speculation.”

Therefore, we can understand how each part of the armor is necessary and how you can’t do without any single part. Each part is necessary and reenforces the other part(s).”

“I have read Ephesians 6:10-20 to learn about the armor of God.  I have also read other books, such as the fictional book, The Sword, the Garden, and the King, by Michael Phillips, which discussed God’s armor.  I have not however read a book that covered it in enough detail for me to truly understand why I really need to wear it and how to wear it.  This book was exactly what I needed, so I can grow into a strong Christian.”
Reviewer: Rani Grant (christsbridge.blogspot.com)

“The authors show the real and present danger of the Devil and his demons without sensationalizing the topic. In fact the book constantly points us to Christ and his person and work for us, not speculating on abstract ideas about the devil.”
