Romans 1-7 For You by Tim KellerThis week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for Romand 1-7 For You by Timothy Keller. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“The style of writing is sermonic—clear explanation coupled with heart-penetrating application. It serves both as a model for Bible study and for sermon prep. It inspired in me the same kind of delight I have had in the best Bible studies that I can remember having participated in.”

“If you have ever wondered what exactly all the discussion about Romans 1-7 was about and how it relates to you as a believer, Keller’s Romans 1-7 For You is an excellent place to start your journey through Romans.”

“I would highly recommend this easy to read commentary to any believer to supplement their study of Romans 1-7. It’s size and style is neither highly technical or overbearing, but rather easy to read and separated into small manageable portions.”

“Allow Keller’s insights in Romans 1-7 For You to inform your study. Glean helpful insights and illustrations to use in sermons or small group studies. But even as you do, read it with the good of your soul in mind, recognizing afresh all Christ has done on your behalf, and grasping anew the glory of the gospel in Romans.”

“Despite his reputation in some reformed circles, Keller does a very strong study of Romans 6 and the balance of law and grace. In fact, the study of that chapter is some of the most balanced language I have ever read on the subject, walking the razor thin line between legalism and antinomianism in a faithful and biblical way.”

“This book is great for anyone longing for a deeper understanding of Romans as well as life-change by the gospel. Very few books do a good job of being both devotional and exegetical/theological; Romans 1-7 For You accomplishes this. You will come away from this book with both a clearer understanding of what the biblical texts mean, as well as greater love for God and a greater desire for grace-empowered obedience.”

“I would commend Romans 1-7 For You to anyone looking to work through Romans. It’s handy for personal devotional use, basic teaching, or as another source alongside your heavy reference works. It does not replace a good, academic commentary, but supplements one nicely.”

“Keller is one of my favorite pastor-theologians. He does a great job of explaining the text. I certainly appreciated walking through Romans again (reading it along side my Bible). I think that it will serve as a helpful teachers resource for anyone seeking to hand on the truths of this Epistle. As I got to the end of the book, I was disappointed that I have to wait to see how Keller treats the last half of Romans (which has some truly fantastic and difficult to understand stuff). I eagerly await the next installment!”

“Like Phillip accompanying the Ethiopian eunuch, who was lost in the confusion of Isaiah, Pastor Keller sits down with the reader and in a very palatable way, offering his insight and explanation. It is not a commentary on Romans, it is not even a devotional on Romans, it is in fact a pastoral guide through a very important section of Scripture so that the reader can be both enlightened and compelled to heed the Gospel’s call.”

“Keller does not stop with his explanation of the text, but moves on to explaining both theological and practical issues raised in the text.”

“This expository guide through the first half of Romans by Pastor Tim Keller is a helpful synthesis of Paul’s Epistle with an eye toward the pastoral and practical implications of the gospel.”

“I have yet to see a more exciting and accessible resource to help lay-level readers genuinely study (and not simply think about) God’s Word – even as challenging a portion of God’s Word as the epistle to the Romans!”

“The book’s accessibility, Keller’s obvious love for Jesus, and his emphasis on personal application all commend it, though I’d also suggest using it in tandem with something else (Moo and Stott come to mind, both listed in Keller’s bibliography) for the sake of balance and thoroughness.”

“This book works great as a reference tool, but was designed to be read straight through too. I read it that way and found it a devotional feast. Many volumes billed for such usage usually fail at one or the other, but where they failed this volume succeeds.”

“All in all, the series is a great concept, and in this third book of the series Keller has in my opinion done an outstanding job of helping us better know and love what God said, who God is and what God has done.”

“This book is a must have for anyone wishing to have a better gospel-perspective from the book of Romans. It is well worth your time reading wherever you are in your theological growth.”

“Keller engages the important doctrinal truths of Romans and explains them in ways that the reader can easily grasp. These truths are foundational to one’s understanding of the gospel. Keller knows this and puts the cookies on the bottom shelf without compromising the integrity of the message.”

“I will be completely transparent with you about my experiences reading anything from Keller. Typically, I begin one of his books feeling that I am in a healthy place spiritually. A chapter or so in one his books and I find myself repenting for sin issues in my own life that I need to overcome through God’s spirit. My experience with Romans 1-7 For You is no different. Included in the appendix of the book is a section on Identifying the Idols of the Heart. It is powerful. Heart-rending. Life-changing.”

Romans 1-7 For You is an accessible, and deep, commentary on one of the most impactful books of the Bible.  The pastoral care and nurture flowing from each page of Keller’s book is a needed breath of fresh air in the world of commentaries on Romans.  No matter if you are a new Christian, or have been saved for 50+ years, this commentary will help you grow deeper in your walk with God and develop a greater appreciation for the Savior who redeemed you with His precious blood.”

“His position on Romans 7 is that it describes the struggles believers continue to face after salvation. Keller is careful not to force the reader into a theological mold but encourages them to see the text and feed on it. His practical insight and emphasis on application combine to provide a commentary that doesn’t stop with the head but moves to the heart quickly. It can be read as a devotional book with benefit, or used as a text for an adult Sunday School class or small group study. I highly recommend it.”
