Seasons of the Heart: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another by Donna KeldermanThis week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for Seasons of the Heart: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another, compiled by Donna Kelderman. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“Amazing women set aside to show us, after all these years, standards and instructions that we should still live by today. Their words, many of them so touching and heart felt have a way of you wanting to stand along side them and soldier on no matter the cost. This devotional is good for the entire year, one read each day. Simple and right to the point, with Bible verses and small biographical summaries included.”

“There are some real gems in these writings. They are ideal for reading in a short free time, perhaps, while feeding the baby or after putting the children to bed but they are the sort of reading that it is best to contemplate.”

“Inspiring selections from some remarkable women are included in this year of devotions. At the back of the book, you will find a biographical sketch of each of them. After reading the sketches, you will be amazed and inspired at what they lived through and struggled with while still holding on to their faith and trust in God.”

“I think these are very encouraging devotions for other women to read. We can definitely learn from things written by those in the past.”

“I love devotional books, and this is no exception. I believe that devotions are a very important part of our lives, and Ms. Kelderman has taken the writings of many Godly women in different phases of their lives and shared them with us. Each woman is an inspiration and I feel that this devotional is a must for all women to read. No matter what your day is like, what your feeling, I know that you can relate to these women, and share the depth of their faith.”

“these selections are wonderful reminders of the security we have in Christ, knowing that nothing will take us from his hand in the end. I think many women will be encouraged as they read these devotions by godly women of the past.”

“ I love the fact that these writings are from long ago, from women who have gone before me and being able to learn from them. Also included in this book are short biographies about each lady. I found it very interesting and informative to learn about each one. Truly going along with the subtitle, “a year of devotions from one generation of women to another.” I would highly recommend this book to women of all ages. You will be encouraged by reading and learning from the wisdom and experiences of these Christian women of generations back.”

“Facing many of the same struggles and trials in life as modern women, these genuine and honest devotions show the hearts of women whose desire to love and obey the Lord carried them through life and will inspire the reader to persevere in the faith as well.”

“Reading their inspirational works each day has given me a different outlook on my life. Many of these women faced hardships which I can only imagine yet their faith in God didn’t waver, they put their trust in Him and spent much of their time sharing their faith with others. I only pray that one day I could be that much of an inspiration to someone.”

Seasons Of The Heart is the perfect devotional for any woman who wants to reflect on God’s Word in a deep, rich way, with a different perspective than contemporary devotionals provide.”

“The subtitle of the book is: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another, and the collection really is a powerful reminder that regardless of the era we live in or the modernity of the problems we face, truth remains, God is faithful, and we can trust Him. What a wonderful testimony to us.”

“In my personal life, I have no female interactions. Yet I found myself being able to relate to all these women in the different stages of their lives and faith.”

“Kelderman had a great idea when she decided to compile this information from all of these wonderful women. It was helpful for me to have this advise in short pieces, because some of their dialogue was difficult for me to understand. When it is hard for me to understand something I have to spend a lot of time going through each sentence, so shorter pieces don’t take a lot of time in my hectic life and still allow me to learn a lot.”

“How can a woman who lived during the fifteenth century connect to one living in the twenty-first century? Kelderman answers this question through daily devotions which swell from women familiar with suffering, trials, sickness, and exhaustion, just like women of today. They have struggled to believe God will do what He says He will do. They are acquainted with doubt, fear, and failure. They have waited beyond human reasonableness for God to sustain them through uncertainty and calamity. They understand disappointment, longing to be loved, and the burdens of responsibility. This spiritual nourishment prepared long ago surprisingly yet delightfully satisfies.”

“I personally have to thank Donna for putting together a devotional that is both theologically sound, and is geared towards ministering to women. My wife has read this devotional almost every day since I received it in the mail, and she has thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the fact that my wife is being ministered to by a group of ladies from church history that will help encourage her to maybe broaden her horizons and read other writings by these ladies as she gets the time.”

“In today’s world we are so much more casual with our writing and our expressions of thought than those who wrote several centuries ago. I am finding great comfort in reading the soulful outpourings of these 12 women as they responded to their own scripture readings and daily devotion with God.”

“This isn’t a sentimental devotional but a spiritually meaty book. It reminded me of the Puritan devotional Voices from the Past, but with a woman’s touch. These ladies weren’t afraid to challenge their sisters regarding sin, holiness, and devotion to the Word. At the same time, their writings are full of gospel encouragement in Christ and overflow with worship.”

“These women are from varied backgrounds and seasons of life; many endured hardships and sufferings beyond what most of us might experience. But the common element, the common thread, is their enduring faith in God. And their focus, even in the midst of their own struggles? Encouraging others to draw near to Christ, look to Him, abide in Him, and glorify Him.”

“Hold on to your heart, as you journey with these women through each treasured page and discover that despite the time gap, humanity has very much to absorb from those of another age.”

“These women were from various walks of life, from a different time of life than what we know, and yet they experienced life how we do. They know pain and tragedy, illness and death, loneliness and disappointments, as well as overwhelming joy. Their words are wonderful, always bringing the reader back to the beauty of being in Christ.”

“I really enjoyed reading the preface as well as the bio’s of all the ladies who were featured in this book. I had never heard of any of them so the bio’s helped immensely. The variety of hardships the author’s had to endure was quite incredible. They seemed to all grasp their strength from their faith in God.”

“I am sure that this devotional will be a blessing to many ladies.  My wife has already begun reading it and has thoroughly enjoyed it.  The short size of the devotion has proven beneficial to her as a homeschool mom with twin 1 1/2 year old boys.  I am sure it will be beneficial to many more ladies who are quite busy. ”

“I enjoyed these devotions written by women from different centuries than us,but who still have so much wisdom we need to hear. Each devotion is one page with a Scripture verse. Some of the language is still a little old-fashioned, but understandable. I liked that their biographies were included. I was familiar with some of the women, but others I had never heard of. This is a beautiful hardcover that would make a great gift for a woman you know and for yourself!”

“While I will not, on this side of eternity, ever sit to a cup of coffee with any of these ladies of the faith, it will be my greatest pleasure to have them as my mentors in the year to come!”
