Judges For You by Timothy KellerThis week the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for Judges For You by Timothy Keller. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“This isn’t your typical commentary. It’s part of the God’s Word for you series and is designed to be used as a standard commentary, as a devotional, or as a resource to help you teach others, and it really does all three well…  I benefited from this book and you will too.  I recommend it and give it four stars.”

Judges for You is now the best devotional I have read on the book of Judges. In classic Keller style your mind will be opened to the book in a fresh way and you will be challenged on every page. This is a must have for personal and group study on Judges. Keller puts you in the pages of Judges to show you why we all need Jesus, the perfect judge and savior.”
Reviewer: Craig Hurst (craighurst.wordpress.com)

“Reading Judges for You was like a breath of fresh air for me… As with the other books in the Read, Feed and Lead series, Judges for You will challenge you, help you to grow in Christ, and in turn allow you to lead others in preaching or leading a Bible study. I highly recommend this book for use by Pastors, Sunday School teachers, laymen and seminary students alike.”

“In our day’s resurgence of Christ-centered preaching, little books like Tim Keller’s, Judges for You are tremendous resources that serve pastors by coaching them to faithfully teach God’s Word, and to help them uncover some of the typological treasures that are so often left just beneath the stories.”
Reviewer: David Norman (davidnormanblog.com)

“I read through Judges For You from cover to cover, just as I did with Keller’s Galatians For You a few months ago. I highly recommend that you grab a copy and read it. It will put a lot of the history of the Old Testament into greater perspective for you.”

“This is an excellent resource to read & own. It will be used repeatedly… I highly recommend this book for use in Bible Study, as a devotional or as a commentary.”
Reviewer: Joanne Viola (daysnthoughts.com)
Rating: 5 Stars

“The book reads much like a devotional commentary and less like an expositional or exegetical commentary, which is fine if you understand that going in.  If you desire to know Judges better, this is a solid read for you.”

“Every once in a while I come across a book that really impresses me. Judges for You is one of those books.”
Reviewer: Andrew Wencl (missionsoutlook.blogspot.com)

Judges for You is not hard reading, nor is it long. But I walked away after reading it with a fresh conviction of the sin and idolatry in my own heart and an assurance that is only found in Jesus. In my past readings of Judges, it has been easy for me to say that I would have acted differently than the Israelites. But the reality is that my heart apart from Christ is just as idolatrous as theirs. Keller’s commentary helped me to see this, and then pointed me to Jesus.”

“Not many times would you pick a commentary on Judges and it would be saturated in the gospel. Keller goes through the book of Judges verse by verse and wrote this commentary that is very readable. If you are wanting to do a study on Judges, make sure you get this book.”

“Through Keller’s examination of the text and through the reader’s personal study, he wants us to see the glory of Christ in and through Judges. To see our need for Him and to grow in our desire to worship and obey Him. It’s hard not to walk away from the book seeing all of these things. Get this book and read carefully.”

“I enjoyed this study and the study on Galatians immensely – more so than some of the published works upon which [Keller's] reputation is based… I would be happy to recommend it to others for personal or small group study.”
Reviewer: Coralie Cowan (lifemoreabundant.me)

“The vividness with which Keller paints each verse/chapter of the book of Judges as he works his way from beginning to end is incredibly rich and quite literally transports readers back to Bible times and allows you to feel like you are actually there experiencing these events in Israel personally.”
Reviewer: Joshua Davis (GoodReads.com)

“Tim Keller takes a confusing and often scary book of the Bible and treats it with respect by looking to the God who sovereignly used the sins and evils of His people to bring about His plan of redemption that would culminate in the perfect ruler of Jesus. ”

“Keller draws the ultimate hope out of this dark book.”
Reviewer: Tom Farr (tom-farr.blogspot.com)

“The strength of the book lies in Keller’s incredibly clear writing style and his ability to understand the human condition and apply a well-exegeted text for the purpose of heart/life transformation. Because Keller is so easy to read, without sacrificing substantial content, the reader will thoroughly grow in their knowledge of this difficult book and how it fits into the rest of the story of redemptive history.”

Judges for You really helped open my eyes to some of the clearer applications of the Biblical writings… I gladly recommend Judges for You to those wanting to dig into this portion of the Old Testament.”
Reviewer: Doug Hibbard (doughibbard.com)

“This book is a helpful guide for the person reading through Judges for themselves, and for those seeking to lead others through it the reflection questions interspersed throughout will help facilitate discussion and growth.”
Reviewer: Mike Knox (mikenhelen.blogspot.co.uk)

“This book is less like a commentary and more like a guide book, and that’s ok! Keller walks the reader through the book of Judges in very manageable chapters that are even subdivided into two parts making it a perfect book for devotions or discussion…… Those in the church who may be wary of reading through a commentary and getting bogged down in language and grammar discussions can use this tool to help their personal study.”

“Parts of the Bible can be difficult to understand, but thankfully there are writers and scholars to help us find the answers to our questions. The book of Judges is such a book, and Tim Keller has painstakenly taken the time to get into the meat of the book and explain it. If you have wanted to get more from your reading or study of the book of Judges, this book will help get you through it.”

“Judges is one of those books in the bible that can be difficult to read. And even more difficult to apply to your life. However, as the title indicates, Judges is for the believer.”

“this study is helpful, clear, insightful, and faithful to the Bible and the Gospel. It works on several levels, and could be helpful for both young and mature Christians.”

“I’ve never seen such a great commentary on an Old Testament book of the Bible. It was interesting, easy to read, and definitely made me want to learn more. I would highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious to learn more about this book of the Bible.”

“Simply put, I will never read the book of Judges the same way again and neither will you.”

“Perhaps the best thing Keller does is compare the half-hearted discipleship of the nation of Israel and helps the reader examine there own discipleship. Israel many times did not completely leave the worship of the Lord but went after Him with a half-hearted effort. Their actions showed God was not really worth it. They did a poor job at remembering what the Lord had done for them in the past. Their forgetfulness, as well as our own, is what causes us to not give God our everything. Oh how many times I have been guilty of this.”

“In short, this is a very good book indeed. It is a good complement to other volumes. Used for personal reading and reflection or for group study it will confront us with the dreadful possibility that for us, too, perhaps God’s people have become indistinguishable from the people around, effectively lawless and kingless – and will direct us to the King we need.”

“This book, as part of the larger “For You” series states that its goal is to be: “Bible centered, Christ glorifying, relevantly applied, and easily readable” In the opinion of this reader it has accomplished all of its goals.”
