God In My Everything by Ken ShigematsuOver the next few weeks the Cross Focused Reviewers are participating in a book review blog tour for God In My Everything: How an Ancient Rhythm Helps Busy People Enjoy God by Ken Shigematsu. Excerpts and links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“This book is a valuable resource in a day and age where the business of life tends to move many of us away God and towards the pursuits of life. Those desiring a more vibrant spiritual life should take these rules of life to heart and put them into practice.”

“I really enjoyed this book!  Even the section on work gave me a sense of Ken’s passion to promote a vision that work is created by God as good, and that even the lowest of positions deserves praise.  I think this book will reach a broad swath of people from professionals, married couples, to college students.”

“In today’s society we have become “weak” Christians. We go to church weekly, but don’t truly worship from our hearts. We are able to do lots of “spiritual” things, and not deepen our relationship with God. We read our Bible, do our devotions, and check that off our “to do list” but we don’t really spend quality time with God. In this book, Ken shows us how to slow down and deepen that necessary relationship.”

“This is a very comprehensive book on Christian living, covering many important aspects of the spiritual life. Through stories and keen observations of life in a city, Ken Shigematsu is able to weave in spiritual practices of the ancient world with the contemporary needs of the world… I love this book!”

“If there one thing we are truly lacking, it is a keen and sincere awareness of the power & presence of God. The travesty is that we think it is a mystical idea to meditate and focus. But this is so far from the truth. The reason we think this way is because we are allowing culture & society to not only set the pace for our lives, but also the manner in which we live. This must change, but it will only change when we pause & know that He is God and is with us.”

“The book reminded me about practicing the presence as taught by Brother Lawrence. The more conscious we are with God in us while we work, play, fellowship and go about our daily routine, the more He shows up in that routine.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is in business or who has not yet found the balance in life between work, play, family, God and the rest of life.”

“God in My Everything is a win! It has me thinking and experiencing God at a level I hadn’t considered before. I am honestly not done working through all the areas in which I want to have rules for my life, but it is one of those books you savor and contemplate as you walk through life. This book is guidebook for a journey rather than a destination or place you arrive by completing your first read through. I highly recommend this book. May we all experience Him as our Everything!”

“I felt I had to read the book with much discernment (as any book but a little more on this one with examples of Monks, Richard Foster and Dallas Willard being referred to). I did appreciate the last chapter with ways different people in various stages of their lives put the principles Ken shared into practice.”

“I enjoyed God in My Everything, by Ken Shigematsu, from the beginning. I liked the trellis, because it had Roots, Relate, Restore, and Reach Out, everything we need to be doing as Christians. I thought his eight guidelines were essential. The ones I thought were the most important to me were “build slowly,” “stay flexible,” and “make time for fun.”

He is also able to help you find ways to see our Lord and Savior in our work, play and everything in between… I would happily recommend this book to any friends or family who were in need of help finding more time for God in their busy lives.”

“It usually takes more than a few decades for a person to realize that busyness is an enemy to godliness. The enjoying of God and glorifying of God now and forever requires purposeful activity in a certain direction. Ken Shigematsu has written a book that helps us redirect our busyness to activity that brings us to deep and lasting satisfaction”

God in My Everything isn’t about legalism, but about developing a personal and practical way of acknowledging Christ at the centre of all of life. Thank you, Ken, for sharing your experience and writing this practical resource.”

“This book will challenge you to examine your devotional life and not just that aspect of your life either. It will call you to experience God in all areas of your life. For that reason I encourage you to read the book in a spirit of openness and prayer, not looking for the few things you can nitpick. I don’t agree with all of Shigematsu’s advice, but in the whole he is spot on. May more of us determine to live out all of our lives to God’s glory and honor.”
