In the past couple weeks, I received a couple new books from Inter-Varsity Press. They both interest me, and I’ve already picked up the first one here.
Global Awakening: How 20th-Century Revivals Triggered a Christian Revolution
This book traces the rapid growth of Christianity around the world in the 20th Century. Author Mark Shaw compares the significance of the rapid spread of the Global Church in the past Century to the French Revolution or the Reformation. Many of us are ignorant of much of this, unfortunately.
In this book, the author contends that this growth is traced to revival-works of the Spirit. He offers several case studies of various revivals around the word in the past 100 years. He aims to show that even though such movements have their warts, they are ultimately a giant leap forward and an evidence that God is at work today.
From what I’ve seen of this small book, it looks to be well worth the read. Opening our minds to what God is doing in other places with other people, is always a good prescription to maintain a proper view of our own worth. I trust it will incite a greater wonder and worship of our sovereign Lord.

The Radical Disciple: Some Neglected Aspects of Our Calling
John Stott has been an influential preacher, evangelist and communicator of Scripture the world over.
“With The Radical Disciple [he] issues his farewell address to the worldwide church he helped to shepherd through the twentieth century. He opens up what it means at root to be a follower of Jesus, exploring eight serious yet often neglected aspects of Christian discipleship.”
The above is from the back cover of this attractive new little book. I’ve heard a lot of good about Stott’s writings, so this work should prove to be no exception. It seems a simple and devotional look at what it is to follow Christ.
The book promises to be “accessible, challenging, pointed and consistently Christ-centered”. I trust it will be. I plan to sit at the feet of this aged saint’s feet and hear what he has to say.
You can pick up your copy from Westminster Bookstore, or get more information about the book from Inter-Varsity Press.
